Gonzo Capitalism
A guy in Australia gets paid to sleep on camera. Six hours a night, livestreamed on TikTok, viewers tipping while he snores. At his peak he was clearing about $35,000 a month doing it. He sleeps anyway. Now strangers pay him for the privilege of watching.
That's gonzo capitalism. The economy where people are getting paid for things that didn't exist five years ago, on platforms that didn't exist five years ago, on terms nobody's parents would recognize as a job.
It's not all sleep streamers. The book covers gamers paid to play, prediction-market traders who beat the bookies, AI-art shops, crypto natives, OnlyFans operators, ad-revenue YouTubers, paid-newsletter writers, NFT artists who got out before the music stopped. Less "open a shop," more "monetize whatever you're already doing."
What's actually new
The traditional advice (get a stable job, start a small business, max out your 401k) still works for some people. It's just no longer the only game in town, and for a lot of people under forty it doesn't really feel like a game they can win.
Three things have shifted, all at once:
- Distribution is free. Anyone can reach a million people from their phone. That used to cost a small fortune.
- Algorithms decide what spreads. Not editors, not gatekeepers, not even followers most of the time. The "next post" button is the new economy's hiring committee.
- The ways money can change hands have multiplied. Tips, subscriptions, prediction markets, micropayments, crypto, ad-share, affiliate splits. Each one creates a slightly different shape of income.
Add AI to that mix and the whole picture gets weirder. A lot of people are going to lose their footing in this. A few are going to build careers their parents don't have words for.
Categories of gonzo income
Five buckets, with a real example in each:
- Creator platforms. Twitch streamers, paid newsletters, YouTube ad revenue, OnlyFans, Patreon. The Australian sleepfluencer is in this bucket.
- Algorithmic content. TikTok creator fund, Pinterest affiliate, faceless YouTube channels, AI-narrated documentaries. The work is making the content; the platform decides who gets paid.
- Prediction markets and decentralized finance. Polymarket, sports betting markets, on-chain liquidity provision. Real money in, real money out, no employer.
- AI-leveraged products. Solo operators selling AI-generated art, voiceovers, niche apps, custom GPTs. One person, no employees, everything outsourced to models.
- Hybrid hustles. Real businesses with one weird input. The Etsy shop where every item is AI-designed. The Airbnb that's actually a parking-spot. The newsletter that's actually a paid Discord.
The point is not "pick one." It's that any of them is a viable answer to "how do I earn money this year," and a lot of people don't realize that.
Is this for you?
You have a steady job and the math is fine, but it's hard to imagine doing this for the next thirty years.
Or: you've been freelancing or running something small, and you keep watching people earn money in ways that look nothing like what you're doing, and wondering what you're missing.
Or: you don't want to start a business in any traditional sense. You just want to know what the new options are and which ones might fit.
If any of that lands, this is for you.
Where to start
Before anything else, spend an hour somewhere new.
- Pick a creator platform you've never used (Twitch, Substack, Patreon, Polymarket). Spend 60 minutes looking at how people are actually making money there. Pay attention to the small accounts, not the big ones. The big ones won the lottery; the small ones are running the playbook.
- Find someone whose work you'd happily pay $5/month for. Pay them. Notice what changed in your head when you did.
