Sneak Preview, Launch Info, and Free Stuff (Whoa!)

It's almost here!

In the past three posts, I’ve alluded to something big that’s coming soon.

It’s now almost ready! After six months of work from Jen & Omar—and a lot of effort from our side of things too—we’ll be debuting their masterpiece starting next Tuesday.

In this post: what it’s all about, why you should care (or if you shouldn’t), and also—your chance to win an illustrated world map or FREE copy of the new toolkit. Whoa.

Or keep reading…

How It Started

Way back in the summer of 2013, I went to Jen & Omar with an idea: what do you think about helping the people who want to be like you? There are thousands of creative people (artists, designers, crafters, etc.) who would all love to earn a good living—but most of them sit on the sidelines of successful self-employment, either relegating their art to hobby status or giving it over to a company or studio.

How can we help them?

Over the next few months, I watched as they took off with this idea—and then greatly improved it.

I asked for 30-40 pages … and they gave me more than 130. I asked for “a few interviews” … and they did a few dozen. These guys were serious!

We went from writing a small guide to building something more like an Empire Building Kit—a complete toolkit to help creative people of all kinds make a good living from their great work.

Best of all, everything they made was highly practical. As I said in the introductory post, the greatest thing about their work is that no one can take it from them. It’s also replicable. If you’ve been struggling to turn your creativity into a career, now you can learn exactly how to do it.

Introducing Designed to Sell: The Unconventional Guide to Creative Freedom

After all the work, we’re now almost ready to release this to the world. (Hint: Tuesday morning at 8am PST).

We’re calling it Designed to Sell: The Unconventional Guide to Creative Freedom. It’s not just a product, it’s a solution. Are creative people destined to struggle! No! There’s another way.

There are also hundreds of pages of lessons and tips, all designed to help artists (broadly speaking) make the right kind of work and connect with customers.

As awesome as Jen & Omar are, it’s not just them—as mentioned last week, we’ve worked with more than twenty additional experts to ensure that the lessons are widely applicable.

How do you choose what to sell? How do you price your work? How do you handle fulfillment? What are the key factors that allow you to build a real business?

All of these questions, and many more, are answered through this new guide.

Oh, There’s Also a $5,000 Guarantee (WTF!)

Since I firmly believe that Designed to Sell will make you money if you invest the time, I wanted to give you something even better than “you’ll love it.”

Here’s how we’re going further:

If you study the materials in depth and don’t believe you can apply something from it to make at least $5,000 in additional income over the next year, let us know—and you’ll get your money back even if you like it.

That’s right—we want everyone who purchases the guide to not only love it… we also want them to use it! This is the best guarantee I could possibly come up with, and I’ll say more about it next week.

I could go on and on about this product (you might have noticed), but I’ll try to restrain myself. Here’s the most important thing you need to know: this guide can help artists, designers, crafters, and “makers” of all kinds find creative freedom.

And … it’s almost ready.

Coming Tuesday, February 11th (With special bonuses!)

It’s been a lot of work to put all of these together, but it’s also been fun—so we wanted to make the launch fun as well.

We’ll have at least three special bonuses to reward our initial group of buyers, including something very special for the first 100 customers:

Preview of Notebook

Bring your ideas to life with this handcrafted sketchbook, created especially for Designed To Sell. Spiral-bound book is filled with 100 blank pages to capture the drawings, lists, and plans you’ll make during your artistic journey. Super-heavyweight bookboard cover features a design by Jen and Omar handprinted by the artisans at Igloo Letterpress. Each sketchbook comes with a special pencil which will serve as your key to creative freedom.

Limited, numbered edition of 100. These notebooks will never be made again!

The party begins on Tuesday at 8am PST / 11am EST / some other time in other places.

Wait, Wait, There’s a Giveaway!

Oh right … there’s a giveaway. In celebration of reaching this milestone, we’ll be passing out a few things. If you’ve been reading along about Designed to Sell over the past couple weeks, or even if you’ve just stumbled on this post, be sure to enter!

All you need to do is post a comment saying “Pick me”—or perhaps something more creative—at the end of this post. Our biased judges, cats, and a random number generator will pick THREE winners on Sunday night at 9pm PST.

You can win…

PRIZE #1: A FREE copy of Designed to Sell

You’ll receive the 130+ page PDF and all the supplemental resources, including a dozen interviews and the ultimate pricing toolkit.

Note that there are three versions of the product, and—naturally—this giveaway will be for the most comprehensive one. Once we launch, there will also be a budget version of the guide for students and starving artists.

To supplement the guide and help you with each aspect of running an art-based business, the following resources are also included:

  • Roadmap to Creative Freedom: A master to-do-list that covers each and every creative and business task you’ll need to complete to achieve creative freedom — from your first sketches to packaging you final product
  • Directory of Creative Business Resources: Our carefully curated list of recommended creative business resources. The directory lists products, services, tools, and suppliers that have been vetted by successful creative businesses
  • Ten Lessons We Learned the Hard Way: Avoid the common mistakes Jen & Omar made while building their six-figure art business.
  • Ultimate Pricing Toolkit: How to confidently put a fair and profitable price tag on your work
  • Finding Your Big Idea: A list of hundreds of marketable product ideas for artists working in virtually any medium
  • Crafting the Perfect Pitch: Get your product featured on top creative blogs and in legit publications. Includes pitch samples and DIY template

(And more … yes, there’s more. It’s the biggest package we’ve produced in more than a year.)

PRIZE #2: The illustrated map that started it all for Jen & Omar.

After Jen & Omar designed and printed this map, nothing was ever the same. They’ve recently reintroduced a larger version in their shop (I have one at home!), but this one is free to a lucky winner. In fact, two of them are free—we’ll give away one copy of Designed to Sell, and two illustrated maps.

OK, that’s it! We’ll go live with this project next Tuesday. Thanks for being around, and thanks as always for reading.

UPDATE: Thanks, everyone! We’ll announce the winners in the next post.

Now I need to kick it up and start making more money from it and branch it out in some additional new directions I’ve been only dreaming about these past few years. I know this is the jumpstart I’ve been looking for. But, there are also so many people I know who could use this RIGHT NOW. I’d love to be able to get them on track by recommending it…and the best recommendation is actually proving it works by using it to reach a new level of success myself. Thanks.

I hope I win!! I’m poised to start a new business where I’m sure I could use your tips.

  • I have been following your bog for a long time, and have seen the work you do remove self and others imposed limitations from my friends and colleagues. I work with teens, mostly from the circumpolar north, and do my best to empower them to use your learnings and leanings to create an “interesting” life for themselves. If I had the the food fortune of being selected to receive your book and materials, I promise to use what I learn to further “catch the dreams” of the kids I work for, and alongside. We can change the “whirled” around so many of our kids. We just have to give them a way to see their lives in full color, instead of in black and white.

Onward, the only direction that life can move!

  • Christina says:

    Fantastic work! Please pick me!

  • alwayslearning says:

Congratulations on your next step and your careful work to make it exactly what you want. I love Jen and Omar’s work, website, and courage to go back to Ohio, despite loving NYC. I know if I win, I’ll be pushed to better consider how to market my one-of-a-kind fiber-art cards. People always ask me where I sell them, and I haven’t so far. They’re the mini version of my contemporary quilts that take days and days to make. So, please pick me! xxxooo

Thank you for sharing this helpful resource.

On top of that, for my first comment ever I want to profusely thank you, because signing up for your newsletter was one of the best (and easiest) choices I have made. For brevity’s sake, I won’t list the many ways my life improved from a simple newsletter here, but I hope it suffices to say I am doing things I never thought I would. :’)

If I could win, I would love to have one of the maps to start recording our and our friends adventures. I’ve been on the hunt for a good one for months!

I’m sincerely hoping what I learn from your newest product and the work I’ll put into implementing it, will help me better connect directly with more collectors of high end artwork.

Thanks for all the work you put into AONC and all your projects. Just hearing about them helps me be more inspired.

  • Pick me because #CreativePeopleAreWeird

  • Claire says:

    I love cats.

And that question, too : How do you price your work?

I am currently staying at a horse farm, working in exchange for food and a bed, in the afternoon trying to make money with my website. I need the right tools, like I have when I am cleaning up the horse shit. I just haven’t found them yet. So, pick me!
Designed to sell might be the answer for making my dream come true: to live in a van, wake up at the Norwegian coast, drink water from a stream and sit in the midnight sun with my laptop. So one more time: pick me!

  • Please, oh please, pick me fine folks,
I sure hope this competition is no hoax.
Your guide sounds like it would be fantastic,
so I thought I would go above and beyond to do something drastic.

Here I have written a poem of desire,
in hopes that this will help me acquire
the attention and laughs of those who read it.
This is a little bit cheezy, I have to admit.

I promise if I win to share it with everyone I know
Raving about the creations of Jen, Omar & Chris Guillebeau.

Winning this guide would sure make my day,
It would take all my troubles away.
So I ask again, once more my friend,
please pick me in the end.

    – A poem by Jake Jorgovan

  • Jess says:

I have a vision. I’ve had a small sum of money set aside for 2+ years from a generous art commission but I’ve held on to that small sum of money too tight. I need a guide to help me spend that money and put my art/design into the world. Pretty please with a Gin Tonic on top pick me.

Good luck with your launch–you’re going to change lives!

  • Trev says:

Love the Unconventional Guides, but curious to see how this one applies to actors/filmmakers. Especially now in 2014, when the unions are freaking out and the internet is still the Wild West. So much of an actor/filmmaker’s career is dependent on the right people seeing your work, and while it could be argued that “do good work, and lots of it” is a sound business plan, I wonder what nuggets I might be able to apply from something that looks like it’s geared towards designers, photographers, writers, musicians, etc. So: pick me!

Thanks for the work you do Chris and company!

  • Daisy Sandoval says:

Love your work it really inspires me! Pick me, pick me please ! 🙂

  • Kenzie says:

This looks like a wonderful resource 🙂

Wow, I am SO excited for this launch! I launched my dream biz (a boutique ad agency for extreme sports/adventure companies) almost exactly a year ago.

I was reading “The $100 Startup” at the time, and have often thought of the “map couple” as inspiration over the past year. Just signed up for your newsletter a few weeks ago, and one of the first emails was about them… it’s a sign!

  • I can already tell from the number of comments that this product is going to be a huge success. I plan on getting a copy and if I love it (I’m sure I will!), I will recommend it to my brother, sister and to so many of my great artistic and creative friends.

  • pohlod says:

    Pick me!!

  • Wendy Reese says:

In a world where responsibility is passed
    and the blame game excels,
Knowing there are those in this world
    who chose differently
    live their vision
    and strive for greatness
    not only for themselves,
    bit for others
    inspires ME to keep taking
towards MY dreams to help others.
Thank you for creating this, for being expansive, and for giving all of us who aren’t able to buy a chance to win…in so many more ways than the obvious.
    infinite love + gratitude!

  • Frela Ferrell says:

Just recently, my young adult son has been in need of some inspiration. A few weeks back, I lent him my copy of the book about starting businesses for $100. It’s been great.

I’m thinking, and guessing, that this new book might just be the icing on the cake.

He is worthy of such a gift.

I don’t REALLY need the proverbial icing but I would like some. 😉

I’ll join the others by doing a bit of a dance and begging ;). Frela raises her hand.

    Thanks for your time!

  • Daisy says:

Pick me, please! I want this for my daughter, a photographer. She is a brilliant artist. If you don’t pick me, I’ll buy it for her, but if you do pick me, you’ll know the book will go to someone who will truly benefit from its wisdom!

    husband & wife team
    * * *

A friend gave me your book (The $100 Startup) for my birthday. I love what you blog and represent. My husband and I both lost our jobs recently and figure, that’s the Universe’s way of telling us to take another direction. We’d love an opportunity to win a copy of designed to sell. In any case, THANK YOU for all that you do!

  • robyn says:

Every single story shared here in the comments deserves a free copy, that’s for sure! I’d love to learn some good ways to improve what I’ve already started, to be honest.

I finally decided last fall to take this hat-making thing more seriously as a business, and put some time and effort into my Etsy shop. I was blown away by the response, and am so excited that it’s been able to provide even the smallest bit of extra income for our family!

I also love that folks get excited about the “one for one model of the shop” – for every hat that’s purchased, I give one away to someone in need.

Now I’m looking to keep going without getting overwhelmed by having a toddler and a newborn (coming at the end of the month!) along for the ride, expand the types of hats I sell while still being true to who I am as a hat-maker, and yes, increase profits while also increasing how many hats I can give away.

But I’ll buy either way, so if you’re going biased here, pick one of the other amazing stories!

  • Craig says:

I would love to have one of those maps! Pick me please!

  • Leif Stenlund says:

When I was a child I wanted to be a artist or a writer. My mom said: No way, son. You’re gonna get a real job. So I did. But I was never happy. Now I am editing my first book, partly thanks to Chris. Is this my time to break free from labour slavery and begin the labour of love?
I don’t know. But I will fight for it.

    Pick me.

  • Mike says:

Don’t pick me. Nope. Please don’t. Picking me would be an awful idea. Maybe.

It would be thrill and an honor to be picked for any of these prizes.

I’ve been doing a lot of *inward* journeying and am finding that my creative voice is seeking new and better outlets. It would be ideal and a little surreal to be able to make $$ with whatever manifests. It sounds like this guide would be a perfect boost to the next level and beyond.

Thanks for all of your inspiring work!!

  • Jennifer says:

How fun! Can’t wait to see where this goes. Sign me up! 🙂

  • Will this work for musicians also? It sounds like it might, but can you clarify? Thanks!

  • Toy Laing says:

I decided to finally start my own business doing what I love most…So I typed “how to start a business” in the search bar, and the “$100 Start Up” article in Forbes immediately got my attention. That initial search (which I’ve done dozens of times before) eventually led me to this site which has been totally motivational and inspirational for me. I cannot wait to start living exactly the way that I want! By the way, it would be quite fitting for you to pick me because Feb.11 is my birthday….it’s the right thing to do 🙂

So, to the person who is u

  • Deborah says:

TO THE BIASED JUDGES, CATS, CAT OWNERS, NUMBER GENERATORS, AND ANY OTHER INFLUENCES ON WHO WINS, I would like to submit that the product is only as good as the person who can successfully apply it. So, to get the most marketing and advertisement for your efforts, give it to a person who is making it as Jen and Omar. They are able to apply it, therefore, it will be known to all and you will generator more sales. I have learned this lesson the hard way by being a “if you don’t give it to me I won’t succeed person for years. The “this will solve all my problems, give me the ability, magic or fairy dust to finally live my dreams.” Or, if you don’t give it to me I can’t afford it, so give me a handout and then I can make it. Well, that is my vote. Congrats on a tool to solve the needs of many! As almost all web bloggers say, identify a problem, come up with a solution, bingo. Thanks for sharing this valuable information and may everyone realize the tools work when you know how to apply them and can apply them successfully. Pick me! I am a teacher who is putting out curriculum for 21st Century Learning for kids who need to learn 21st Century Skills, i.e., soloentrepreneur skills

I gain a lot by your inspirational and off-the-track articles. Keep it up!

  • anne s. says:

WOW! It seems the biggest question here is How did you identify this ‘gap’ and choose this project to be developed ? We all love ‘step by step’ books (eg The $100 startup, Lonely Planet guides to ..everywhere ) but is the truth really that the resistance to do the work to be free (of a boss, of a mortgage, of limitations) is that we’re afraid and that stops us from finding the way ?

  • JJ Biener says:

This looks like an amazing product. I would be interested in seeing how these techniques would apply to something that doesn’t necessarily have a physical component, namely music. Looking forward to the release and getting some more specifics about the product. Good luck.

Pick me! Please. And thanks in advance 😉
This sounds like a great product. Looking forward to it.

  • Elly Klein says:

    Pick me!

I’m a gift book writer. I published my first book, Men Are Like a Box of Chocolates (the most delicious relationship advice book ever!) with a non-traditional publisher, and now it’s a hen’s night / bachelorette party event running in multiple cities. While that’s all well and good, the reason I strayed from the original plan (writing gift books for a living) was because of the almighty $$$.

I’ve done Marie Forleo’s B-School, Laura Roeder’s Creating Fame, Derek Halpern’s Blog That Converts, Michael Hyatt’s Get Published, met Chris at Pro Blogger in Melbourne and I’m FINALLY getting the chance to come to World Domination Summit this year. I’m trying to build a fan base online via my funny, cheeky and fearlessly honest column (with video intro), Elly is a Four-Letter Word, but it’s tricky because I write about so many different things.

I’m in the process of moving from Sydney, Australia (my hometown), to New York City, where I’ll be working on five new books and trying to get a literary agent. Whether my book is published by a traditional or non-traditional publisher, I still have to make a name for myself as an artist. Really looking forward to Designed to Sell!

My cat says “meow pick me” (hey don’t raise your eyebrows, I know her well enough to know what she said 😀 ) Also, maybe the biased judges would want to know that I was in the audience when you came to Mumbai for your book launch 😀 (I was too shy to ask any questions though )

  • Monica says:

Yes please! A little start up I am part of is languishing in a bit of confusion (apathy?) and this could be just the kick in the pants it needs. Pick me please!

  • Beatrixe B says:

Wow this sounds like a lifesaver… so don’t pick me, your cat shouldn’t pick either, I mean if you or your cat pick then what will there be left for the random generator to do, think about the poor thing, you’d rob him of his only wish and talent:)
P.s. this is such a nice idea, count me in please 🙂

pick me.. why? ‘cos you should.

  • Irwan Cornelius says:

I struck it out on my own after being employed for 3 years but I’m still trying to get that one big payday. I get on with whatever I can, sometimes resorting to instant noodles as dinner. Please please please guide me. I need help! I need an intervention and this guide might be the one for me.

  • Olive says:

It’s fate. I was just complaining to my bf today about wishing I had a guide on this journey. Pick me!

  • Paul says:

Can’t remember ever in my life seeing such a incredible list of comments as this, screaming for attention, pleading, self-centered, “me me me…pick me…me me me!” along with a few sycophantic approval-seeking words of praise.

On one hand, quite sad to see. On the other, once the contents of this product are actually revealed, I truly hope it will provide everyone with the catalyst for action, confidence and clarity leading to success.

    May all beings be happy.
May all beings find creative freedom.
    Ready to go!

  • Carolyn Bivens says:

If your cats selected me, I would make sure others benefit. As a cancer survivor and part of a pet therapy team (my dog LOVES cats), we volunteer in the infusion ward of a local hospital. We make some beautiful crafts and work to sell them locally with a portion of the proceeds benefiting those who need diagnostic services but can’t afford them. We NEED to know the right way to expand our business nationally and maybe even internationally.
