Giveaway: Free Website Hosting for a Year

Every Friday is giveaway day. Comment to win!

How to Start a Blog

For the past few months, I’ve recommended the hosting company InMotion to anyone who asks for help setting up a new website.

If you’ve ever wanted to start a blog or build a website, they’re a reliable and affordable partner—and in fact, they’re even offering AONC readers a special deal of just $5 a month.

This week the deal gets even better for one random winner: it’s FREE! For this giveaway, InMotion will provide a FREE “Power” plan for an entire year, including the registration of a domain (you can also transfer your existing domain if you have one).

What you need to know:

  • Comment and win a free hosting account for your website or blog. This account will be valid for a full year
  • After the year is up, you can pay to continue with InMotion or switch it over to another host of your choice—there’s no obligation and you can do whatever you want
  • To win, tell us what you’ll use the free hosting for
  • Our cats and biased judges will pick someone on Sunday night at 6pm PST

Enter this week’s giveaway below (click over if reading by RSS or email), then check back on Sunday night. We’ll announce the winner and get them set up!

***
Update: Comments are now closed. Congrats to Amanda Hackwith, selected by cats and a random number generator to win this great bag! Everyone else, thanks for entering. We’ll have another giveaway next week.
***

You can still take advantage of the excellent $5/month hosting offer from InMotion.

I feel like my site can probably use a revamp. I need my own domain, first of all, but navigation and discoverability could be improved and that may help to grow my audience, which I need to do to move forward.

  • Janelle says:

Ah! Thank you for this opportunity! I’d love to get free hosting for the site I’m building for my soccer league. It’s small but I’m working hard to grow the league (thus the website) so women in my community have a place where they feel safe to play and learn and be social.

  • Sarah m says:

I’ve been blogging on and off for 7 years. That’s like an eternity on the internet. I love my blog and I love writing, but I have a very, very old (coughbloggercough) website whose joints are creaking and whose design is now residing near the 70’s plaid shirt bin at the salvation army.
I hope to start a podcast in the next year, and I’d love the addition of a beautiful and well-working site. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • Clare says:

Wow, you published this post within moments of my final decision to launch my own blog. I’ve been toying with the idea for months. My husband died in a car accident last October, leaving me and my 2 year old son to travel the turbulent journey of grief. It’s a rocky path, but I feel compelled to tell my story. I’ve long been a writer, but never to this personal and public extent. I think that embracing this vulnerability and sharing my journey with the world – whether that’s one reader or hundreds – is a decision I won’t regret. Whether or not free hosting for this storytelling website is an option, I plan on following through with this decision.

  • After reading the $100 start up, I have an idea of a start up of my own that combines helping people, with my own personal passions! Free web hosting would be an amazing way to start!!

  • Shawn says:

I will use the free hosting to launch a new website that I am working on!

  • Dare says:

I would like to reboot my website to include my side business that was inspired by The $100 Start Up. Currently I have a personal blog, a business instagram and facebook, a big cartel store, an etsy store – time to reign it all into one location! I will have a look at InMotion regardless, but an oppourtunity to win? Count me in!

  • jr cline says:

I eould finally be able to move my photography up a ‘real’ domain.

  • Michael Armentrout says:

Starting a new technology tract and thought about blogging as I learn. I fresh, new website/hosting would make this a no-brainer.

  • Bree says:

I would love to start my newsletter on this. I’ve been wanting to curate a newsletter for people who read a wide variety of articles online (from sites like Slate, New Republic and many others) and don’t want to miss them, and this would be perfect! Please pick me! 🙂

  • Alex Sartore says:

My hosting with Bluehost is spotty at best, and I’m not happy with their service.

Looking for an alternative as I help Japanese people with their English speaking skills.

  • JF says:

I’m just about to finally start a blog, it would be perfect!

  • I would use the free web hosting to talk about my journey from losing my job at 55 in January to reading $100 Startup, and to starting my own business. Being unemployed for seven months and counting, and starting a business in hopes that money will soon start to come my way is a story to be told. The best part is sharing the wonderful and interesting people along the way that I have met.

  • Ryan Dangaran says:

I have published a few posts on my blog but would love to use this giveaway to usher in a new season of blogging.

  • nayar ali says:

thanks for this opportunity, if i won id be using the hosting for my blog about location independence and my love for travel and photography.
    thanks

  • Audie Sheridan says:

When I win, I will squander what I’ve won by never even logging in to the InMotion – inciting the wrath of all those who entered along with me.

Or more likely, I will start the culural import business I’ve been dreaming of for the past few months of reading your blog.

  • Pat Dowling says:

I just started my blog, and signed with in motion using your affiliation, and they are great.
if I win, I will use the hosting for a not for profit idea I have. Would be great to get it going.

  • Matt says:

I had just decided to go home (after work) and start a blog on what I know best — agro-hacking and foraging. Free hosting for a year would of course be nice but my site’ll be up and going after this weekend regardless.

Thanks for the inspiration to take over the world!

  • Andrés says:

I run my own book recommendation website, I actually use a free web host and free domain name, this will really help me to improve my website, and ultimately help everyone when they don’t know what to read.

  • What a great opportunity! I’ve been blogging about books, creativity and book reviews for a couple of years, but have decided to bite the bullet and self publish my novel this fall after a year of mental health issues. A web site would be wonderful. Thanks for telling me about this company.

  • Marvin Ng says:

Inspired by The $100 Startup, I’ll be using the free hosting to chronicle the journeys of couples on various issues as they make things work. Each and every day, couples handle various issues – from relationships to financial to lifestyle. This will be an exciting project as it presents different perspectives.

My girlfriend and I will cherish this opportunity to run our first project together.

  • Rich R says:

I find it interesting that I was just looking at an offer on another website for web hosting for $1.95/ month. I came to your site to get some ideas for a domain name. I really don’t have anything clever to say about why I would like to be consider for the free web hosting. Whether or not I win the free web hosting from this site. I am determine to start my life in the Art of Non-Conformity. I just recently read your book and manifesto. I feel more confident that I am taking my first steps to world domination. You have provided the blue print to the life of non-conformity for all to follow.

  • Tonya Hobbs says:

Wow, what a great opportunity – we just happen to need that very thing! I run a small non-profit in Murfreesboro,TN called Kymari House. We provide services for kids at risk for abuse or neglect due to conflict in their homes. We have a website, but it needs a lot of work in order to help us raise awareness and generate donations. We would be super grateful to win this prize!!

  • Diana says:

I was laid off last year and am so grateful because now I have the courage to go it alone! I just finished $100 startup and am looking to use a domain that I’ve had for a long time as a hub to start promoting my upcoming business projects that I am working on (decision matrix is underway!). Thank you!

  • Cloudio says:

Chris, excellent work as usual. I love the restyling of your webiste, there is something every day now.

This incentive me to work on my blog with renewed energy.

    You rock!

  • Matt says:

Have been putting off launching my new website for so long. Would love to win this – it might be the kick in the pants that I need!

  • Jay D says:

I’m in for applying. I just want to start my first blog about what has been successful for me as a teacher, coach, and real estate investor with others. If I can share what’s helped me in life and allowed me to travel around the world then I just consider it to be paying it forward. And if I can get my web hosting for free then all the better.

  • Antonino says:

Up until now I worked only for Italian’s website, now I would like to start my own website, this time in English, the blog would be on how to apply (or use) a narrative (or, more simply a process of storytelling) to improve our lives, going a step further from the usual “Read this/Watch this to change your life” that’s most of the time works just as a headline and nothing more.

  • I will use this to start. I’m always in the planning phase, scared of what might happen if I actually start. If I start, it can’t be perfect anymore and this scares me.

I love the coffee industry. And I’ve noticed that there is a distinct lack of any of the business and marketing values that I believe in being used. It’s like the industry has not realised all the change occurring around us. Strange because it feels like the perfect storm for it. My project is all about connecting people to the wonderful world that is speciality coffee in a way that hasn’t been done before.

But most of all, this project is about starting. Starting so I can get better for the next project, and the one after that.

Thank you in advance for considering helping me start.

  • Christian says:

I’ve recently graduated from college and started working. While work has its ups and downs, I’ve especially found myself missing the “extracurricular” activities and clubs I participated in while at school.

I would like to start a blog documenting my progress trying to re-earn my Eagle Scout status by the original requirements. I went through scouting and achieved Eagle Scout status, but I’d like to chase the old-school adventure and rough-and-tumble nature that Scouting was founded on — building lasting memories and useful skills in the process.

In brief, the free hosting would:
    – give me the “push” to jump on a project I’ve been procrastinating on
    – help me to have adventures and learn skills
    – help me share the stories and learnings that will undoubtedly arise from such an odd project.

As a side note, it is AWESOME to see everyone’s ideas and projects they’d like to work on!

  • No sob story–I’ll save the stories for the brand new blog when I win? 🙂 Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Thank you for this opportunity. As a self-publisher, I’ve started building my online presence with a blog that’s currently hosted by “Blogger”. 🙁 Yes, the feels, much hurt. I’d absolutely LOVE a free year of hosting so I can build up my readerbase with a strong online presence. I already have a domain name, so I’m totally looking forward to transferring it over. I hope I’m considered, and again — you’re good people.

  • Cheryl M says:

    and read between the lines

  • Troy C says:

I would like to have an online financial planning site that utilizes Skype. I would like to focus on educating high school and college graduates that lack basic financial skills. My goal is to make finances such an easy/approachable topic that you can spend your time living an amazing life, not worrying about money.

  • Dave says:

Already have hosting but it would be nice to try out different companies.

Hey, I’d love to use a website as a way to share my music and writing work that I’ve been putting off for so long. It could serve as a great networking tool and as a great platform to express myself. Thanks for reading!

  • Just redid my personal website look and have been using the same host for about 4 years, but find it so complicated to do anything on the back end. Would love to give a new host a try, so this would be the perfect opportunity!

  • Hannah Boyd says:

Hey there! I would use the free web hosting to finally launch a web presence, as a platform where I can blog/sell my handmade items and art/sell vintage clothing and odds & ends I find at yard sales…basically use it as the excuse I need to get creative about making my hobbies profitable. May the most worthy reason win! 🙂

    Hi Chris,

I haven’t looked at all f the links yet, but the ones I have looked at are interesting. I want to start a web site, but I am not sure about what. Geology and painting are my two main choices, but I’m not sure on which to make the effort. It could also be on cats as we have four, so I am interested in your cats that are also judges.

    Yours,
    Don Fowler

  • I do hope I get to win this a I am in the process of moving countries and having a new hosting company would be such a beautiful gift.

  • Esther says:

I’m part of a small group of health professionals in a specialist field in public health. We have been trying to set up a website for a long time but the cost is out of our reach. We have had a really successful year promoting ourselves and getting recognition for our work, including co-hosting an international forum in our field later this year. Now is the time to capitalise on our success with a funded website!

  • My travel companion and I have just started blogging to share our adventures. We are currently house sitting for 2 months on Molokai and will be on pilgrimage in Spain this Fall

  • Mateo says:

I’ve been using turnkey websites for the past few years. I’m 25 now, and I learned to write HTML and CSS before I learned to drive. I want to get back to the art of really building a website. I am extremely rusty , but I’m just a geek for a good challenge . The website will be a portfolio page, I want to launch a new business. I currently work two jobs, so finding the time do this will be tough. Benjamin Franklin managed to invent, write, found a country at the same time. I’m pretty confident I can build a website.

  • Aga says:

Hi ! I am a Polish girl in her twenties who started questioning status quo over a decade ago, dived deep into Non Conformity outlook with what is and never looked back. I got completely addicted to knowledge and kept falling in love with learning process, chasing “the white rabbit”, discovering new doors of perception along the way, creating and shaping myself through digging up hidden, underground, alternative information on : behind the curtain health therapies, cures and wellness, integrative, functional medicine, Meta health, Mind Body Spirit connection, quantum physics, holographic universe theory, parallel universes and multidimensionality, Eastern philosophies, neuroscience, Self development and Self Realization techniques, psychedelics, Consciousness and Awareness shift, Oneness, meditation, energy, frequency, sound healing, bridging science and spirituality etcetera; I like connecting dots. The amount of information I gathered on personal journal is truly well worth sharing. I want to take an active part in awakening and shifting the consciousness of other people and putting all my research out there to touch people’s lives. I have no hidden agenda. I just truly want to serve humanity as much as I can with my talents and doing deep, underground research is definitely one of them (I studied Journalism). I’m still paying off bits of my student loan so having a free 1 year hosting website would be a true relief for me. Thanks! Namaste x

  • Gretchen Howell says:

Thanks for all the inspiration, Chris! I’d use a website to promote my hypothetical kickstarter campaign to promote my graphic novel about living in Asia and cycle touring around the world! Also, to blog about my next bicycle tour from Alaska to Argentina.

Another very generous offer, hope I’m chosen. Thanks Chris!

  • Mark Kellner says:

I’m sure there are tons of people deserving of free website hosting for a year, and I guess I’m no different: It would be nice to have a webhost without worrying about costs, and nicer still to be able to launch and develop a new site in one of my fields of interest. To be honest, I doubt that *any* of my website ideas will hasten the arrival of world peace, cure illness, or bend the arc of justice. But if you pick me, I’ll work hard not only to justify the selection in terms of quality, but also as an example of ANOC-style thinking!

  • Maya says:

I would use the free web hosting to launch a new bad ass website!

  • Allan says:

Sweet blog, one of the best. Hah I’m an artist (http://www.bluethumb.com.au/aceulogmailcom) so crafting the words to win a competition is not my strong suite, and I have no idea how to paint a comment. But I did buy Chris’s book Art and money so I do know I need a Website.
    Have fun choosing.

I’ve got a few different domains and blogs in the mix but I’d love a fresh, new hosting and blog/website for my writing that helps to say I’m taking my writing more seriously! Watch out world! I’m starting my own practice that incorporates mind-body approaches to healing (talk therapy, yoga, and yoga therapy). I would love to get a free year of web-hosting as this is all getting really costly — but I believe that I am offering something everyone can benefit from! Thanks for considering me…Rachel

  • Rex Williams says:

Genius way to get comments, Chris. I’d be not-so-genius for not adding mine.

    Thanks for dominating the world.

Hhhmmm ( insert fingers tapping here) what to write, what to write. …. 6 businesses, sales at farmer’s markets and local runs, not one website up and running. I am strangled by time management which creates the ripple effect of you know what rolling down hill. Wait, did I just their myself under the bus? Looking at positive side. …I’ll win and finally get a website, I’ll take advantage of the $5.00 offer and hope to get a website, or I’ll start a 7th business as a bus mechanic. It is pretty interesting once you are under the bus 🙂

  • CBdzen says:

I would like my sister to have a website so she could show photos and prices of her handmade porcelain painting & drawings. She is an accomplished artist but as such, i.e. concentrating all her energy on her art, she has not been very successful in her marketing. She needs a chance to properly display her intrincate, beautiful and colorful work, which would please many, and maybe grant her the acknowledgement she deserves after struggling for so long.

I quit my corporate job and am in the process of brainstorming and branding my website, The Wandering Humanitarian, which documents my travels and temporary work assignments in developing countries. I am so impressed with AONC’s makeover and new look, and I would love to launch my website with the support and help of InMotion!
