Save the Date! Announcing the 2012 World Domination Summit

Friends and readers,

Three months ago, we brought together 500 people from a dozen countries for our inaugural World Domination Summit. You can see what it looked like in this brand-new video recap:

(You can also see thousands of photos from the weekend over here. A few of them are below, in case you missed the earlier recaps.)

Today I’m proud to announce that #WDS2012 will be held in Portland from July 6-8.

This time, world domination can no longer be contained to a single art museum. Instead, we’re moving to the famed Newmark Theatre for our main stage events, and a number of additional venues for (expanded) workshops, breakout sessions, and meetups.

We have bands coming in from faraway lands. Our Bollywood DJ will return for an encore performance. The world’s finest hammocks will be hung throughout the lobbies. We’ll have yoga in the park, a 200-person photo walk through the Pearl District, a mass book signing with 20 authors, and an attempt to set some sort of Guinness world record.

It will be big… but not TOO big. A mobile site will allow attendees to connect with each other based on shared interests and location, ensuring that plenty of small-group gatherings can take place. A “highly-sensitive person” lounge will welcome the introverts among us.

Perhaps most importantly, the event will remain non-commercial and non-profit. I don’t think sponsors are evil, but I don’t want them for WDS.

But wait, I’m getting ahead of things…

The Registration Process

We’ll have plenty of interest, and I know tickets will go quickly. Last year we sold out five months in advance, even without a real plan. (Thanks to those who trusted us to come through.)

By the time the actual weekend rolled around, tickets were being scalped on eBay for a $300 markup. An unknown number of people without tickets came to Portland just to hang out. More than 60% of first-year attendees pre-registered to return next year.

In an attempt to keep things less manic, we’ll do registration in two phases this time: Wave I starts this Thursday, and Wave II will be in January 2012. (We’ll give first choice of workshop registration to Wave I and first-year pre-registered attendees.)

I’m thrilled to produce this weekend adventure, and look forward to welcoming many friends to our fair city again next year. Our newly-expanded action team is already meeting monthly at World Domination HQ to ensure we rock this out.

If you’d like to be part of an epic adventure and you want to meet like-minded people while learning in a fun environment, you should come to WDS. (And if it isn’t for you, no problem.)

Those who are interested can visit WorldDominationSummit.com this Thursday, September 8th… and don’t be late. We’ll release tickets first to year-one attendees and the waiting list, and if any are left over for Wave 1, they’ll go out to the public around 11am PST.

In short, all that’s missing is you. Will you save the date?

  1. Wonderful video! Now I’m going to have to give some serious thought to my travel plans for next year, especially after hearing so much great feedback from the first WDS.

  2. Oh no! That’s the weekend of my sister’s wedding :( Let me know when you start taking pre-registrations for the 2013 event!

  3. so excited! I hope I can get in! On the waiting list.. :) But not a first time attendee.. Portland is my home stomping grounds and would be great to come visit family and friends as well! Perfect excuse!

  4. Will be online Thursday in hopes of snagging that ticket!

  5. Can’t wait to take over Portland again with our league of extraordinary ladies and gentlemen.

  6. Looking forward to an amazing event!

  7. No! I was really hoping I would be able to make the 2012 convention, but just like last year it look like I will be out of the country working on a new photography project. But this just means you’ll have to do one for 2013 as well! :)

  8. In case anyone is dithering about whether or not to come, let me add my name to the very long list of people who felt it was an amazing event. Chris, you really set the tone for the event to be one where people were encouraged to go beyond internet cliques and just connect. The speakers you chose made themselves incredibly accessible to attendees, and the attendees themselves were so friendly and warm. It was a really, really lovely experience.

  9. Great videos! Looking forward to successful event in Portland!

  10. Excited to return to Portland for WDS Part Deux! :-D

  11. Loved the video, Chris (and crew)! It was such a great trip down memory lane from WDS2011… Looking forward to WDS2012!

  12. The first WDS was one of the highlights of the last five years for me. The energy of having so many creative, enthusiastic, and independently minded people together is something I cannot wait to experience again!

Thanks Chris for starting all of this. Truly amazing.

  13. Hi Chris! I’m so excited and hopeful that I’ll get the chance to partake next year. We don’t have an extra dime to spare to get tickets this Thursday, but I’m not going to let that dampen my spirits. If it’s meant to be, I’ll be there. How much are tickets, bytheway? Did I miss that in this post? I’ve reread it a couple of times with no luck.

Also, I just wanted to mention, every time I go the the WDS website, it freezes up on me. I’ve tried a couple of different computers – and it’s always the same result. Is anyone else having this problem? I’d really like to check out the site more, but it won’t let me.

  14. I hope you can come too! I’ll say more about the price with the registration process on Thursday – in short, it will be more than last year, but less than the cost of any other all-weekend event I know.

As for the WDS site, we’re currently seeing a lot of traffic over there. It looks OK for me now, but maybe check back in a bit?

If the ticket comes with a visa then yeah, will save the date :) Hopefully there will be a summit in the future that will be more accessible to Indians.

  16. @Angelene,

Alas, I can’t control anything with visas – if I could, it would make my life easier too!

Fortunately, we had attendees from a dozen countries for year #1, and I’m expecting it to be many more for next year.

  17. We’re planning on making it this year! Love the video. Great music choice.

  18. The video is gorgeous! Totally takes me back and reminds what a blast the first WDS Conference was.

  19. Love the video. Would love to come, but probably can’t afford it next summer. The life of a young married guy. I know it will be amazing!

  20. We’ll be traveling on our RTW adventure in 2012, but count us in for future years. Love the passion and ingenuity; love that Portland plays a starring role. Thank you, Chris, for spreading exuberance and spunk!

  21. I’ll echo what Kate said: this year was amazing! Loved the video. I probably won’t be able to buy my ticket on Thursday but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to get in on the registration in January! Thanks again Chris for putting on such an amazing, community building event :D

  22. Thrilled to have attended in 2011 and looking forward to 2012. If I signed up at end of 2011 conference, do I still need to log-on and purchase during Phase 1 sign up, or am I good to go?

  23. Sounds like you’re good to go! Thanks, Sophia.

  24. Thanks for sharing an image from my journal! I was sad to have not recorded a video, so I’m delighted to see my journal, sharing the Mark Silver love, represented here.

Looking forward to 2012! So glad I have my ticket already.

  25. I couldn’t make it last year due to finances (lack of), but am on the waiting list for 2012. I can’t wait! :)

  26. Can’t tell you how excited I am to come back this year and just drink in the energy you’br created with WDS. And the video is fantastic, really captured the warmth of the event.

  27. Great video! I can’t wait for Round 2. :-)

To everyone who is still thinking — I attended the first WDS; its extraordinary energy still sustains me to this day.

  29. The trailer looks amazing! Great job Armosa Studios and Team WDS! I was so inspired by the weekend that I started Radio Enso, an online radio show to interview the speakers and participants that I met there (and didn’t get to meet), 15 years after getting out of the radio business! I wanted to hear their stories, find out more, and continue the conversations that we started. As one of my guests put it recently, it was a “life affirming” experience unlike either of us had ever had with a gathering of people like that! Can’t wait until 2012!

  30. That video brought a flood of warm fuzzy memories and I cannot wait until next year’s event! I don’t know what I expected to get out of WDS when I arrived but I can’t begin to explain how much it has given me in terms of personal growth. It helped connect me to an amazing network of people and these connections have been instrumental in helping me figure out what it is I really want to do with my life. I feel like I have the support now to make things happen. We all have a purpose and no one has to go it alone. I can only imagine the amazing people I will meet at next year’s event. The theatre looks so magical, I expect great things are to come :)

  31. I can’t say enough good things about WDS Round 1 (but I’ll try). It was amazing, inspiring, encouraging and refreshing. Meeting with other people who “got it” just amplified the passion I had for my own ideas not to mention learning about other fantastic ideas. I made real connections with brand new BFFs. The amount of mutual support and energy was remarkable. I didn’t hesitate in signing up again when presented with the opportunity at the closing ceremony.

  32. So sorry the dates conflict with my daughter’s birthday. Maybe next year!!

  33. I would love to get one of the ‘golden tickets’ since I wasn’t able to attend last year and REALLY wanted to. I was hoping it would be closer to the East Coast this year. Oh well, I may still try to make it since I don’t know of any other venue with the potential to connect with so many ‘out of the box’ thinkers/doers!

World Domination Summit was AMAZING!!! I haven’t stopped talking about it since I left Portland. The video captured the essence of it very well!!! Can’t wait for next year. Awesome!

  35. P.S. I watched the video from Paris with my friend Tonja. We loved it and she commented on what a great community I’ve found myself in. I must say she’s right and I am grateful for the people I met at WDS this year and the people I get to meet next year.

  36. Wait…there’s a 1,000-character limit? Then it’s impossible to say everything I’d like to. The first WDS was so phenomenal, coming for Year 2 is an absolute no-brainer.

The video above isn’t just a series of “best of” moments–that was the kind of mingling, connection, exchange of ideas, inspiration, and just plain fun that was happening the whole time. WDS was (and I’m sure will be again) one of the only times in my whole life I’ve resented having to sleep because it meant I was missing out on some formal or informal gathering somewhere. In fact, if you know how to multi-locate please let me know, because I hated having to choose between some of the simultaneous events.

Worthy of note was the feeling of equality among everyone present. It didn’t matter whether you were a “big shot” or someone with no on- or offline presence who was attending out of sheer curiosity…no one was treated differently according to any notions about status. Even the well-known presenters were always around and approachable, and they stayed for the entire summit–which I’ve been told is highly unusual for events like this.

Thanks to Chris and the entire team for doing this again!

  37. It sounds fantastic Chris. I start building my house soon so I won’t be able to make it to the 2012 summit, but I’m hoping this will be a regular event and I can come to another one. And can I just say how much I love the idea of a ‘highly sensitive person’ lounge!

  38. I will be there with bells on!

  39. July cannot come soon enough!!!!

  40. Can I clarify something. At what time will tickets be available for first year WDS attendees before they become available to the public? Also, will each person on priority as year one attendees be limited to one ticket?

My wife attended the first WDS, loved the conference, loved Portland and can’t stop talking about it! She’s persuaded me to travel over for WDS2 so we’re starting to get plans together.

  41. @Andy,

It’s not super-scientific — I’ll probably release tickets to 2011 attendees in the first hour, then to the waiting list an hour later, and the general public (if any remain) an hour after that. I’m planning for mid-morning EST.

All the best and I hope to see you guys in PDX!

  42. Can’t wait to join you again next year for another weekend of great energy, inspiration and learning a ton from everyone I meet. Good luck with planning and see you in PDX!

  43. The Highly-Sensitive Person Lounge sealed the deal. Can’t wait!

  44. I’ll be free-ranging my way across the globe to be there, ready to conspire on some fabulous world domination!

  45. …I simply can’t wait to return for WDS II. The timing couldn’t be better, either. I’ve now made my pre-purchase booking of the event a birthday gift to myself.

Looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces in what I consider to be the best city in the US.

Glad it’s coming back, Chris — kudos to you and the WDS team for all of your hard work!

  47. AH! I can not wait! Love Portland and love WDS!

  48. So if we were a first-year attendee, what time do we go online to snag a ticket on Thursday?

  49. Question 1: for those of us that pre-registered for 2012 at the end of WDS2011, do we need to do anything else?

Question 2: as a WDS2011 attendee, can I use that status to grab a ticket for my wife to WDS2012 during the first hour?

Many thanks (and apologies if this has been answered on Twitter … couldn’t find anything in my quick search).

  50. 1. You’re good to go!

    2. Yep – just be quick. I’ll write to all 2011 attendees tomorrow before sharing the registration link elsewhere.

  51. I couldn’t make it this year but have been prepping my bank account for months now in advance of WDS 2012. I’m so excited by all the inspiration and action to come, and keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll fly off the waiting list and into a space on Thursday!

  52. Wauw, beautiful video, well done!

Now I totally miss everyone. Can’t wait to see you all again + a whole bunch of new world dominators!

  53. I have been watching this a few times a day since you released it. It does in fact capture the essence and give me a jolt of awesome each time. Can’t wait for July!

    Thanks Chris and Team!!!

  54. This video is en-LIGHT-ening and heart-warming. And the snippet from Jonathan Fields toward the end brought tears to my eyes. I heard great things about WDS this year and many of my favorite people were there. Can’t wait to attend next year, to register, meet new people, and support this work!
