How Can You Help Someone for Free? A Social Experiment

help-someone-for-free

Dear Readers and Amazing People,

Greetings from Austin, Texas. I had a fun time yesterday with many SXSW attendees and residents of this great city. Special thanks to BookPeople for hosting, to Betty Jean for coordinating a large amount of beer and cupcakes, and to everyone who showed up.

Life is good and I’ll be going for some of Austin’s famous breakfast tacos right after publishing this post.

Let’s Have a Social Experiment

Last week I briefly mentioned an idea to think about how you can help someone. There’s no time like the present. Let’s kick this off!

A few principles:

Despite what you may have heard, there is indeed such a thing as free lunch. We get it all the time. Plenty of people have done plenty of good things for you and me, without asking for or expecting anything in return.

Lately I’ve been thinking about scaled generosity, about how helping people in one way can lead to helpfulness elsewhere.

Last year at WDS we had a lot of fun giving every attendee $100, along with the suggestion that they put the funds toward a project or person they believe in. Since then we’ve been collecting stories on what happened with the money.

Some of my favorite stories have involved scaled generosity or multiplying effects—see Lissa’s project, Natalie’s project, Sarah’s project for our friends at Charity: Water, and many more.

This Week’s Experiment

So here’s how it works. Figure out something you’d like to give away for free. Do you have a skill you’d like to offer—something you can help someone with?

Is there something of value that you no longer want, but someone else could put it to good use?

Is there something you sell that you can give away to a few people, or to everyone on a certain day?

If you sometimes charge money for this free thing, that’s OK—nothing wrong with making money! Many people in our community are self-employed. I’m gearing up for my own overdue product launch in a couple of weeks.

But this is all about helping someone for free. So for this experiment, make sure you really offer it with no strings attached.

You can share your offer by:

a) Writing a blog post that links to this one. Our system will automagically see it and add it to the trackbacks on this page.

b) Posting a comment that explains what you are offering for free. It can be anything you’d like, and if there’s a website related to your free offer, include it in the URL field (not the comments field itself).

On Monday, March 18th (one week from today) I’ll share an upcoming roundup post with a summary of many of the links, offers, and stories. Cool?

There aren’t really any other parameters. If you read AONC you’re a smart person, so I bet you can figure something out. And I bet you’re a generous person too.

And now for those breakfast tacos…

Comments here.

I’m a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant and can help you find the right skin care products that are perfect for your skin. I love helping people to feel great about themselves, and sometimes when we look good on the outside it helps us to feel good inside too. Don’t worry if you don’t live near me, I can send you samples and we can meet via Skype to talk about your skin care needs and then I’ll teach you how to use the products best for you.

i knit hats and give them away. mostly i give them to folks around my area that are in need (homeless vets, students in at-risk areas, etc). My website She Makes Hats chronicles this. i don’t ask anything in return for these hats, and most folks don’t even know who the hats came from!

  • Shannon Lagasse says:

Love this! I once did a similar post.

I’m offering FREE Body Image Breakthrough Sessions on my website. This is a half hour coaching process that helps people to discover their limiting beliefs so that they have an opportunity to change them, if they so desire.

I’m also offering a free Body Image Breakthrough Kit on my website.

This really has me thinking: What else can I give away? I have a butt-ton of books that would probably be better off in a library (where people can read them whenever) than on my bookshelf (where I put them after I’ve read them or where they sit until I make time to read them).

What fun! I love giving away stuff for free. Seriously, it’s like the best high of all time.

I am a certified Health Coach and Medical Student. I run a blog called Nourished Existence that offers wellness tips, fitness plans, healthy and delicious recipes, grocery lists, and overall healthy lifestyle inspiration. Everything on my blog is free to anyone who is ready to take control over their health, body, and spirit.

  • Satya Robyn says:

Me & my husband run a mindful writing company, ‘Writing Our Way Home’, & I’d like to give away ten of our ’31 Days of Gratitude’ e-courses to anyone who could do with a little extra gratitude in their lives… the first ten to email me ‘gratitude’ (satya@writingourwayhome.com) will get a free course. We often give away low cost places to people on low incomes. Giving stuff away without expectation of anything in return is important! Thanks for the opportunity Chris.

  • Maria says:

I’m going to help my mom set up a website for her small business.

I’m a cycling coach, and I have been giving free talks hosted by the local university cycling team about training, diet, racing, etc. I also write about racing tactics on my blog! This year I am working on using my connections in the cycling world to get racers on the teams they want to join.

  • Akshay Nanavati says:

Hi Chris. Awesome Idea. Nothing like giving back to make a difference and change your own life! I am fortunate in that I have a pretty good knack at helping people overcome limiting beliefs and fears that come in the way of their success. I will be offering free sessions to three people this week and I will giving away an awesome Osprey pack for free as well. Was planning on selling it, but this inspired me to give it away instead. So thanks Chris!

  • Peg Cheng says:

Great idea, Chris. I love free stuff.

I run a business called The Personal Statement School where I help people kick ass on their law school applications.

If you’re reading this and are interested in going to LAW SCHOOL, please email me and I will give you a FREE 20-MINUTE PHONE CONSULT to answer any questions you have about applying to law school. No question is too big or too small.

  • Dan Waters says:

I’ve been playing with the idea of how to help someone from every country in the world, but without visiting every country – that’s been done 😉
The rule I was toying with was that the person doesn’t need to live there, they simply need to be able to qualify for their national football team! My skills are photography, copywriting, marketing… …washing dishes, mowing lawns, giving people a lift etc. So if any of you need help with that or anything else then maybe you can be my first helpee. I’m off to Malaysia and Thailand in a couple of days, so that will be two countries I can tick off pretty quick! My only caveat is I want the person to send me a photo of themselves, or I can create it myself if I can hook up with you. I thought it would be lovely to have a portfolio of images showing someone from every country in the world, with a little bit about their story. So, which country is first? I’m waiting.

  • Sonja Holverson says:

I’ve been consulting former hospitality students pro bono off and on for many years and love the feeling of having been a valuable contributor to a new business and/or career. I’ve also helped non-Anglophones with editing and copywriting on articles or on the English pages of their websites.

I would like to offer my editing skills to 2 new travel bloggers who are not yet comfortable writing in English. I could either edit a blog/article or the home page of the websites for each of them.

Your idea is wonderful, Chris and I’m pleased to participate. Thank you.

  • Tess says:

I am offering HOLOSYNC brain entrainment cd’s for FREE (I’ll only charge for postage, or send them collect). I currently have the intro level, up to Purification level 2 (The approx. value for each level is 200 and something dollars!). If this interests you, let me know!

  • jr cline says:

Right off the top of my head I think I’ll be giving away some baby sitting this week. Some friends with a toddler are facing the imminent death of a elderly family member. I can help them out by keeping there child some.
I’ll see if I can come up with some additional ideas.

  • Kerri says:

I listen really, really effectively and ask excellent questions. This helps the person I am listening to explore their issue/struggle/decision and figure out what they want to create. Mostly these days I do conflict coaching but I have worked as a counsellor in the past and still have a few counselling clients. I am happy to give away my high-quality listening 🙂
Today, for example, I listened to a woman for 45 minutes who is in conflict with her co-worker. She mostly talked and I asked some questions. I offered her some ideas. She cried a little. She deepened her understanding of the dynamic at play and gained insight into next steps. I think that being so immediately and tangibly helpful to others in this way gives me more satisfaction than anything else in my life!

  • Deborah Antich says:

So, after hearing you speak yesterday at Book People ha ha – it’s @suburbanclair again. 😛 I have been building this new idea all morning, and now you have offered me the perfect springboard to make it available, and for free! It’s actually a workshop that I’ll be offering in Austin, about tapping into your own psychic resources at work. For the purposes of the giveaway I’m going to offer it in an email format so anyone can do it from anywhere. Here’s how it works: It’s an email reading – you can ask me up to 5 questions related to your business that you would like for me to look at with a “psychic eye”. There are a couple of cool Take Aways I’ll include that can be applied to everyday life. The reading will include a followup check in. 🙂

The whole point of what I do is showing others that we all have psychic abilities, and how to access them and use them to live a fuller and happier life. This is my true passion – that and creating connections. Now, give me a few minutes, I’ll go write the blog post. 🙂 Can’t wait to see what everyone does with this challenge!

  • Susan Parker says:

Hi, great idea. I’m working on more free stuff but have a free e-book on how to take care of the skin and body with fifteen simple and readily available ingredients. It has lots of ideas, recipes and information on how each of the ingredients like rolled oats, olive oil, honey and clay can be used in face masks, baths, scrubs and more. It was fun to do and am working on material for some classes both paid and free. If you like a hands on approach to your skin and body care check it out!

    Next to the closets!

  • Elijah Woolery says:

What a great project! I’m a photographer and designer currently challenging myself to do 6 small, entrepreneurial side projects over the next six months, and in my most recent post I’m giving away a digital set of underwater photographs intended for wallpaper. The other underwater sets are a bargain at $1 (or more if you choose to give a bit extra), and half the proceeds go to sharksavers.org to help protect sharks and mantas from destructive practices like finning.

I don’t know that these will be helpful in a traditional sense (other than maybe offering some inspiration on your desktop), but I hope that people enjoy them, and that they help increase the wonder at all the fantastic creatures that inhabit our planet!

  • David Galligan says:

This same idea has been on my mind for some time now. I repair mechanical clocks as a sideline business. I know a widow who has a grandfather clock that needs me! She can afford to pay for the repair, but I want to do the work for free. She is the mother of a friend of mine.

I have hesitated to approach her about it because I just know she will try to compensate me in some way, and that is not what I want. All I want is to know that my friend, and his wife and children, one of whom is my goddaughter, will enjoy hearing that clock chime at grandma’s house.

I think the solution is to call her this evening.

  • Erick Widman says:

I’d like to offer up free legal services to help someone become a U.S. citizen. I’m an immigration lawyer and will handle all the paperwork and resolve any tricky issues. The lucky citizen-to-be can be based anywhere. We’ll talk via skype or the phone.

  • bettie says:

Ah, the timing of this is perfection! When I woke up this morning, I was feeling like I wanted to do something. So I decided to give away five portrait sessions (I think I’m up to eight, though). Then this email landed in my inbox and I knew I was on the right track. It’s a small thing I can do, to make someone feel beautiful.

  • Brad Borland says:

I would like to offer free health/fitness advice. I am a trainer, husband, father, cancer survivor, member of the military and all around nice guy. So send me your questions and I will do my best to give you real-world, practical, yeah-I-can-do-that advice!

I love your project. I would like to offer the book WONDER by R.J. Palacio to 5 people. “If every person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you wil try to act a little kinder than is necessary – the world really would be a better place.”
    ― R.J. Palacio, Wonder

  • Anuj says:

I’d like to offer up to 2 hours per person for 5 people to help you plan a trip (any kind of trip). I’m not a travel agent (so i don’t do bookings etc) or an expert of any sort – just someone who really loves travel & testing all the tools & resources I’ve come across in different scenarios.
You’ll likely save some time (up to 2 hours!) and who knows, maybe even some money if you land up finding something better than you’d otherwise use.
What’ve you got to lose? 🙂

Since the New Year, I’ve been volunteering with New York Cares, and have been able to volunteer on average for one project per week. Tonight’s project will take place in Chelsea where I’ll be helping people with vision impairment/loss make jewelry and key chains. This not only ties in with my own background and skills with jewelry making, but it also feeds into my desire to help others and leave my corner of the world a slightly better place. (Oh, and by the way, I took a large bag of clothes from my closet to the Goodwill today.):-)

Amazing idea. I can offer two things for free

    1. a 45 minute coaching session. I typically coach women in high pressure jobs who have found themselves feeling “there must be more to life than this” and help them to build an exceptional life they love. But I am willing to offer the service to a wider audience for this group 🙂

    2. I’m also an experienced experiential marketeer so any events or experiences you need help planning I’ll be happy to give you some advice/tips/ideas. I’ve planned a few weddings but I’m more involved in corporate style events but I can always take a look 🙂

  • James says:

I can offer any podcasters out there some free intro, outro or promo voice work. I’ve done this for other people before, and they generally liked the results. Sometimes it’s nice to have another voice on your show, and this is a great way to get a standardized intro or outro.

A couple limitations: nothing political (any politics), nothing vulgar or hateful, and you would get a raw voice file. Also, let’s keep it to two or three recordings.

This helps me keep my chops up, and maybe it’s something you would like to have as well. I have a pretty good setup (broadcast quality gear in an apartment studio), so you can have good results.

I do have a day job, so I can only do so many at a time, but let’s give this a shot. Let’s have some fun with it.

  • Cornelius says:

I’m a productivity and life balance coach and I would like to offer for free three coaching sessions (worth $250 each), to the first three people who contact me.

    How can I help?
    – If you can use support in designing a more meaningful life for you: get clarity on what is the most meaningful path you need to follow in your life and design a plan to make it come true;
    – If you need to address life balance challenges: do you feel that all you do is work? are you witnessing the quality of your relationships go down? would you like to dedicate more time and energy to your passions?
    – If you face personal effectiveness/time management challenges: procrastination, lack of focus, not having enough time for things that matter.
    – If you need to reach a stretch goal: define it, develop a strategy, an effective plan and get it done.

I would be happy to provide for free the following package (worth $250):
    – Clarity Questionnaire
    – Skype Consult (50 min)
    – Detailed Action Plan
    – List Of Resources For Further Study

I would be happy to help.

In life, all that really counts is helping others. Many can’t give money. But, many can give of themselves, do a good deed, share their knowledge in the hopes of soothing someone in distress.

This past week I found that I am dyslexic, having difficulty integrating words and thoughts and how its had a pervasive affect on my life. Well, I realized a substantial segment of our society has also fallen through the cracks. So, I’ve decided to write an article ( I hope I can finish it) to share with others that their failures were from a language disorder and not from stupidity. In fact many dyslexics are extremely bright and creative. I hope my sharing this knowledge will help those to accept themselves and to find peace in a trouble world.

Simply go to my website (click name to the left of this message) and use the contact form there. Put in the subject line: Free K-6 Art Lesson Plans . Category #2: I’d like to offer free to the first 5 USA Wounded Warrior servicemen or women (or their husbands or wives)–that contact me– one 8×10″ art print from my other website here: http://www.asjartworks.com . If you have served in the last 5-10 years, simply go there and use the contact form and put in the subject line: “Wounded Warrior Free Art Print” . Tell me your story in the body of the contact form.

I live in a very poor city North of Boston. This Saturday I’m opening a new yoga studio that allows anyone to take classes, regardless of income. While I do have suggested fees, anyone can come on a donation basis. Those who can’t afford any donation can practice for free. I’m hoping that giving away classes will encourage others to give more and help support and grow our community.

  • Gregory Berg says:

Thanks for this opportunity, Chris! I host and produce Radio Enso, a free weekly podcast that I hope inspires people to live, work, and move about the world consciously — in a chosen direction, sometimes different from the norm — and gives them the tools to do so.

To date, I’ve aired 75 new episodes and have featured quite a few online and personal development leaders (like Chris and many of the speakers and workshop leaders from WDS), who have shared their stories with the world. It’s sort of a “life class” for both myself and my listeners.

    Hi Chris,
I am offering a smoking cessation program based on my book QUITTING IN TIME: HOW TO STOP SMOKING ON YOUR OWN to an individual or company needing my service.
I attended your presentation at Cruzio in Santa Cruz, CA and was inspired to re-energize my website and marketing. My new website is under construction and is not currently online.
I have done smoking cessation classes for Delancey Street Foundation in San Francisco and have just been retained by Janus of Santa Cruz to help their residents in recovery quit smoking. I am in contact with the Santa Cruz Veterans Center and the Pajaro Valley School District because they have expressed interest in my program. Since I attended your lecture lots of new doors are opening for me.
You can check out my book at Amazon.
Thanks so much for your inspiration.
    Sincerely,
    Jesse Lemic

I have been voluntarily coordinating logistics for cooking classes. I created the classes for a new immigrant/refugee woman that I met in a transitional shelter to teach. I met her when she was basically homeless with a new baby, and because on all my visits with her, she kept feeding me amazing Ethiopian food, I was inspired to help her begin to earn an income. Check it out on FB — we have her third class coming up in a few weeks.

  • Jacqui says:

Thanks Chris! I actually participated in Natalie Sissan’s $100 change program and within the 100 days finished building my website and eCookbook titled ‘The Art of Roaming Cooking’. It is a recipe book filled with 100 fuss free, freaking easy recipes designed for travelers. I am offering it for free for about another week as an introductory offer (to know that people are interested in it and enjoying the recipes brings me joy).

I must say I have had an interesting experience lately trying to offer it for free. I put it up on an Australian bargain website and had over 1500 downloads (and other Australian freebie sites picked it up over a couple of days). However, I reckon I wasted 2 days trying to offer it on similar bargain forum websites in America without any luck of getting it posted once. Interesting…

The post from one of the photo shoots is scheduled to go live on my blog tomorrow.

  • Tonya Hobbs says:

All my life, i’ve been an avid reader. I read books of all varieties from classic literature to vampire novels to insightful non-fiction (i.e., The Art of Non-Conformity). Over the years, I’ve collected a lot of books, and since i’ve recently begun a process of simplification of my life, I’ve thought of just donating them all to Goodwill. But instead of just one big anonymous donation, I decided to be more thoughtful and actually have some fun with it. So now, when I visit my favorite coffee shop, I leave a book. When I go to the dentist, I leave a book in the lobby. Anywhere it marks sense, I leave a book. In each book I write a note, asking the person who finds it to enjoy reading it, and then pass it on in the same fashion. That way, I’m spreading the joy of reading and giving at the same time:))

Fun opportunity! Thank you, Chris, I would LOVE to play along.

I am a visual artist, creativity coach and educator who believes in creating everyday (in some way). My blog focusses on creative inspiration, process and support. I facilitate 5 day e-courses designed to jump start creativity so that others may begin incorporating a creative “habit” into their lives (either AGAIN or for the first time). I offer a safe and nurturing place for people to play along and explore their creative side. If this sounds like something you are desiring, wanting, needing, I will give away 10 classes to the first 10 people who contact me with the reply “I want to create everyday”.

I also offer creativity coaching and would love to offer my 21 day package to the first person who contacts me with the reply, “I can commit to 21 days.”

I am also in the midst of my March Creative Commitment. DAY 10’s tiny painting, a cardinal, was posted on my facebook page. If this piece speaks to you, please contact me with the reply, “I am ready to recognize my self importance.”

SO inspired by all those that have already left comments. Thank you, ALL!

Hi. I live and teach in Bangkok, Thailand; and I’ve been here for over two years.

If you’re in town and would like me to show you some of my favorite restaurants or street food that may not be in the guidebook, I’d love the dinner company sometime.

I can also coach you in my very limited, basic Thai phrases.

Find me on twitter: jenny44indy and tell me you saw this post on AONC.

One other word of caution: research Songkran (Thai New Year, happens in April) so you’re not blindsided. A 3 day/week long country wide water fight is not something you want to take on unprepared.

My offer stands until the end of June.

  • Lenka says:

I don’t know if this counts as well, but I’ve started a facebook page where I share helpful articles about acting and showbusiness I found, read and learned something from as well as inspirational quotes. The thought behind this started when I began blogging about my journey of becoming an actress abroad. Many people who share this dream with me (often people from countries where the showbusiness industry is either small or non-existent like myself) often want to move to markets like London, Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver or Toronto and have no idea where to even begin. I was once in this situation and it took me a few years and many trials and errors to even get begin to understand the industry. The hardest part was to actually find any resources that could help me understand it all and learn what I could do right now, so that’s why I’m sharing all the helpful articles, because I’ve created quite a list of reliable resources I follow for advice and I believe could help others too. The idea also is to create a community of people who are going through the same thing, so we can be there for each other. The page is still new, but helping people is something I want to do.

Only in the last few years have I started charging folks for any followup advice. My specialty is “micro-gigs”–only charging folks for the few minutes it takes to answer their questions, send them off with some great new ideas, etc.

I design websites and last year I felt like I ran into a wall. I love working with brand new businesses and people just starting their entrepreneurial journey but in order to pay the bills I was getting sucked into larger and larger projects with the type of big, faceless businesses that I hate working with.

So this year, after a lot of brainstorming, I came up with what I think is a great solution. I’m now offering super affordable website design and branding packages to new entrepreneurs – a sort of limited time, limited number template bundles.

Whenever I jump into a new project, I always make a point of giving the first “product” away. It’s a great way to fill up the karma bucket early and to work out the kinks in the process.

Right now I’m offering a giveaway for my first design bundle which is for Photographers looking to start their own business.

I’ve been working in legal publishing and nonprofit publishing for five years, and in the past few months, I’ve helped a few friends create ebooks from larger books they’ve written, and plan the structure of books they’re going to write.

I’m offering my advice (over the phone would probably be best) with how to get started writing a book or an ebook. Do you have a lot of expertise in a field that you wish people understood better? Or are you passionate about a niche topic and there just isn’t literature out there about it? I can help you take your expertise and build the backbone of a book or ebook that will be easy for you to approach in the writing process, and will be straightforward and logical for your readers later.

First of all let me say that you were a huge inspiration to us when we started our business last fall after the company we worked for for 16 years went out of business. We used many of your ideas to get started without spending a fortune, and I still refer to my(very used) copy of “The $100 Start-Up” consistently.

Now to the giving part….we are working with our local hospice provider to do free diagnostic work on home-based medical equipment that they use for pallative care and that gets donated to their thrift store. We also offered the same services to Project Hope which helps provide needs for the homeless. Most recently we are getting involved with a new non-profit in the area called Breena’s Bridge which builds home access ramps for people who don’t have other funding for them. We are trying to find funding sources for them with our industry contacts. Love, love, love making this a part of our business! Also love your idea Chris.

    Hi Chris

Over the past 3 years I have worked as a volunteer with the unemployed and young people who are about to leave school and either go to university or find work. During this time I found that a significant proportion of them lacked certain life skills, such as confidence, decision making or making things happen.

This year I launched an e-learning website that is entirely free and available to anyone who wants to learn how to develop these life skills so that they can take back control and live the life they want to lead.

Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this social experiment!

The hardest part will be choosing – so Chris if you know anyone you think would really appreciate this do let me know. Otherwise it will probably be names in a hat 🙂

Amber, if you are sure you want to part with your WDS ticket I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to have it. I am a local Portlander who couldn’t scratch together enough cash for the WDS 2013… THANKS!

ALSO, I would like to give away a interactive 60 to 90 minute presentation about HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa. For the last two years I have lived and worked in Southern Africa and spent time volunteering at an HIV and AIDS hospice. I have given this presentation / discussion about 12 times to college students and have received lots of positive feedback. I usually cover: what is HIV, how does it spread, history, apartheid, cultural impacts, social impacts, and treatment. I also sprinkle in personal stories from my work in Africa.

If you have a group of people who are interested in learning about HIV and AIDS, I would love to present. I am very passionate about this topic and enjoy any opportunity to spread awareness.

I live near Portland, Oregon and can speak at locations nearby. If you are not from Portland I would still offer my talk if you are able to pay for my transportation costs.

I’m giving away 10 free custom designed website buttons – 1 to each of the first 10 people who respond to my blog post requesting one. You can read the post over here.

Additionally, for each button I do, I’m going to give away $10 (total of $100) to Smile Train which is one of my favorite charities as my son was born with a cleft palate and lip.

And I’m also asking the recipients to gift someone if they can afford to do so. The power of 10 x 10!

    Love this!
Chris, my name is Susan McMullen and I co-host a radio show, The Better You Network. We interview entrepreneurs and those following their passions with the focus being on the journey. Our goal is to share these stories and in doing so provide inspiration, motivation, support and resources to others in the same space. We believe that, though it is amazingly rewarding, it can be lonely or scary to “jump off that cliff”. We have dozens of interviews archived on our site- all free. Also, we love to interview and tell other’s stories, and after the interview, you can can download your interview to use on your own website or to promote your business. If you are an entrepreneur and would like to be a guest, please email me.

  • Angela Rocchi says:

Great idea! I try to give something away for free every day. I am a notary public. Sometimes I don’t charge and ask the person to do something nice in return. If I can’t give my random notart service for free I feed a stray cat or donate my time to the local shelter
Another free thing I do is say hello and smile. A smile or kind word to a stranger might make tjat person’s day!
After Sandy hit here , I was really happy to motivate others to give things for free
I took my organization skills and promoted a chip in for a friend who lost her home. She wound up with $2000 for FREE.
In turn, she has been collecting prom dresses to give away for free to graduating HS seniors who lost their homes to flooding.
    Love your site!!!

  • Lauren says:

I will offer up artwork. Illustrations for your book, art for your walls, words for your ears and prints for your house. Really, I want to share my stuff more. I’ve never had a website beyond my Flickr portfolio linked above and…if someone could help me with that, it’d be a nice trade. And…I want to learn how to make animations and dabble in film. So, if anyone had those things to offer, I’d be very interested. But regardless: art share! I want a bigger world of shared love and creativity. I want to find my tribe. I’d like to know you if you like my work. So here you go!

  • Donna says:

I will be giving away, by random drawing weekly, a free art class to one of my students….until May 1.
What a great idea. Thank you.

  • Tracy May says:

I will make a small wallhanging for 5 people. This can be a memorial, reminder, or “happy place” piece of art. I would require a picture (email) and description of what this would mean to you. Also, any information about the event. Thoughts. Feelings. I have been making these as gifts to help others move forward in their lives.

Example: Pic of 3 generations of “her boys” for my mother-in-law. She is caring for her husband with altzheimers.

Pic of 6 friends on camping/hiking trip, made for them to remember the great times.

Pic of sister, who died earlier this year for the daughter, and one for the sister who donated her bone marrow.

Always full of dazzlingly generous ideas Chris G… Loved this one!!! Thanks for all you do every dang day to inspire GOODNESS.

    Nov 20th, 2012 – After getting (almost uncomfortably) #amped and #inspired at WDS in July… 🙂

I put your $100 toward my charity: water campaign. And then:

I released a free, un-gated 75-pg multimedia manifesto (graphic e-book + accompanying expanded audio on itunes) on how to rock a happier, more connected, and “integrated” life. It includes a free workbook along with it.

I helped launch it with an inspired conversation with my heroine, musician/artist/activist Ani DiFranco.

Our amazing pal Jonathan Fields had these kind words to say about the manifesto:

“KC is a torch-bearer for a new generation of thought-leaders who are looking to play a bigger game in all areas of business and life. He speaks from a place of boots-on-the-ground experimentation and validation. His ideas are equally effective for individuals as they are in the “living laboratory” of one of the fastest growing tech-firms in the U.S.”

    – Jonathan Fields, the “Uncertainty” book & GoodLifeProject.com

I’m fortunate to maintain my dream day-gig, so anything we give… thanks! -kc

Since June 2012, I have volunteered at Muir Ranch. Muir Ranch is an urban garden on the campus of John Muir High School in Pasadena, CA. I work with students at Muir Ranch. The students learn how to grow their own food, where food comes from, and how to eat healthy. The students sell subscriptions of produce to members of the community and have begun to generate profits. Because of the profits, they have had to learn accounting, marketing, and sales. Additionally, because Muir Ranch is an entrepreneur project, the students will qualify for college credit. Here is a piece the local CBS news affiliate did on Muir Ranch –
    http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/video/7561040-students-in-pasadena-grow-and-sell-fresh-produce/

If you are, or will be, in the Pasadena, CA area and want to get dirty in an urban garden, come by for a visit. I’ll teach you some of what I’ve learned about growing a garden.

  • Q says:

2013-MAR-13, 12:17 a.m. // Chicago, I-90 West. It has been a long day with 5+ hour delay at SEA. (Obviously, my good travel karma is running low.) It’s wet with temperatures hovering around freezing. I am driving to my hotel for what will be about four hours of rest before I have to get up for a meeting. I am consistently frustrated with tolls on I-90: tollpass or cash only, and some exits are unattended/coins only — a retro 1970s nightmare for visitors. It’s late; I’m tired and irritable. I pay my toll, getting change. Before I pull away, I turn to the attendant and give him exact change saying “for the car behind me.” He looks puzzled. I explain again, I’m pre-paying the toll for the car behind me. I drive off. Satisfied with hopefully helping a stranger’s late night drive…maybe home, maybe to work, maybe to visit a friend…a little better.

Chris I love your idea. I am a professional business coach who has over 40 years of experience starting and operating successful businesses. I will help any business owner or manager develop key messages which should be the foundation for any marketing effort, and provide practical advice on how to use them. This usually takes me 1-3 hours with someone in person or on the phone. I will offer this service free of charge for the first 10 people who call. You can contact me by phone at 206-935-4211.

  • FRANCES KEOGH says:

Another great idea, Chris. In Balance, aka Fran Keogh, is very pleased to offer two hours of health coaching. This can be via Skype or telephone. In person classes are offered for someone in the greater Cincinnati area. I am a certified yoga teacher, laughter yoga leader, workshop facilitator, health coach. My workshops/classes running now are called Feminine Wisdom and are all about reconnecting to ourselves, with the foundation in yoga and meditation, but peeling away the layers off the mat! See my website for more information. Please note this is not limited to the female gender!

  • Brenda says:

I’m a freelance editor and blogger focusing on book-length fiction and nonfiction projects. I’ve actually contacted you (Chris) before asking if you had any ideas about giving away a free lunch–I wouldn’t have the freelance business I have today if it weren’t for people letting me edit for them for free, and I’d love to be able to pay it forward.

So, in that vein, I’d love to hand out two free critiques to readers who have book-length projects that could use some professional editorial feedback.

I’ll read the book and put together a document including some feedback on the manuscript’s strengths and some suggestions about shoring up weaknesses. If the book is fiction, I’ll address plot, conflict, audience, theme, characterization, etc. If the book is non-fiction, I’ll address effective organization, engagement, message, etc. I’ve got experience in a variety of genres, including travel memoirs, so I’d be happy to read whatever comes my way.

  • Christine says:

I LOVE this idea! I am all about living a life in part to service to others and love that you are doing this inspiration in a grand way.

I can help someone get a job.

I am a Inside Recruiter/Hiring Manager and have hired hundreds of employees in various organizations. Since I am on the inside, I love sharing the inside scoop on what to have on your resume to catch my attention, how to best answer tricky interview questions, and how to creatively get your foot in the door if no one is calling you. All tactics are styled around
what’s working in 2013 and I absolutely love helping people get a job they want!

I will help anyone but have been searching for returning U.S. solider’s to support.

I am also willing to help as many people as needed on a group phone call or a in person workshop in greater Los Angeles.

    Thanks for the opportunity Chris!

I actually wrote an article pretty recently on simple things we can do each day to spread happiness. Fits this perfectly!

  • Stephany says:

@Amber- I would love to go to WDS. I couldn’t afford the tickets and the transportation since I’m in NYC but this would be a great opportunity. I’ve been reading up on the testimonials from last year and looking at the website for the presenters and it would be amazing if I could go!

Thanks for offering up your tickets, that was incredible nice of you!

    best,
    Stephany

  • Aprille says:

OMG, so much to say! First –

AMBER – I would <3 that ticket! I so want to attend WDS, I am working on making awesome change, but I'm in a building phase and don't have sufficient funds for a ticket of my own. If it helps in the decision – I am building a business that uses stories to connect people. A key part is a community program designed to get people to connect and talk whose biases may have kept them apart otherwise. Currently, I'm in the early stages of a pilot that I hope can then be used as a template in scenarios around the world.

    Second,
CHRIS – so much of what I'm doing is WIP. I'd offer people in on the ground floor but need to prove templates a bit first. So, I'll fall back on some standby's –
I have a loaf of homemade bread (tell me in general what kind you like and I'll surprise w the exact kind) plus 3 spice jars of herbal tea – lemon balm (good for headaches), sage (energy), and basil (nausea and more). Goes to first "bidder".

And I'm making a note to repeat in the summer when the WIP is a little further along.

  • Ben says:

    @Amber

I’ve been looking everywhere for a ticket to the WDS. It would be amazing if I could participate, and possibly be able to go because of someone else’s generosity. If I am not selected for the ticket, then I’d appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of a ticket that is being resold!

There is no better feeling then doing something unexpected for another person. On my 25th birthday this year it was handing out Starbucks cards to strangers, and on Valentine’s Day it was giving red roses to girls and women that had to work that day.

  • Ratana says:

Re: Amber’s post on WDS, if you haven’t already given away the ticket, I would like to be considered.

And in the spirit of the post, I will offer 30 minutes of brand and marketing consultation, either by phone or by Skype to 3 of you who message me and refer to this post. I have helped entrepreneurs who are trying to grow their business, solo artists define their brand, and launched hundreds of products across the world. I’m happy to help you with yours!

Chris I’m writing to Amber for the WDS ticket:

Amber – I would love the opportunity to receive your free WDS ticket. I’m a Jamila a female entrepreneur based in Philadelphia. I have been living in South Africa for the past two years and just relocated back to the USA. I’m super excited about growing my dream Soul Purpose Company which provides business and professional development training for socially conscious entrepreneurs. I’m working to offer virtual courses so that I can stay connected with the community that I was serving in Africa. I believe that attending WDS will help me build relationships and partnerships with like minded people looking to change the world. In exchange for the ticket I would love to offer free admission to your choice of one of the courses we will offer this year or next. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely – Jamila

  • Karla says:

    Amber,

It’s so amazing that your offering up your ticket to someone wanting to go. If it’s still available, I’m highly interested. Although it’s free, I’d like to also send you a gift in return but it will be a surprise.
This has been a tough year on funds for me. I just got my permanent residence and am finally able to work and I also am learning a lot about the online world so I can build myself a side-business in the near-future. I’d love the chance to go meet remarkable people at WDS but as of now, I can’t afford it. I’m still going to try either way but this would be a great help!

Thanks so much for the inspiration and the opportunity!

  • Chris says:

    @Nina,

No problem with having *other* paid offers somewhere on a website – that’s fine. But there’s a distinction between something that is truly free (whether altruistic or not; that’s another discussion entirely) and things that are free for the purposes of selling something else. That’s called lead generation instead of helping someone, and it’s not what I hoped for from this experiment.

Fortunately, plenty of people posted genuinely helpful offers, many of which I was glad to highlight and share.

To the first 10 people who email me at linmayu@gmail.com, I offer your choice of:

    1. A free yoga class for you or your group (I can travel to any public location in the Chicago area to teach the class, or the Portland area from July 8-14)
    2. An original abstract painting created for you with blessings (if you have a specific intention or wish, let me know)
    3. A workplace feng shui consultation (even if all you’ve got is a cubicle, I can show you how to do some easy adjustments to reduce stress, get you noticed by the boss, neutralize a negative or offensive colleague, or get you the heck outta there!)

Also, for everyone, I offer an e-course on principles of spiritual entrepreneurship, which is free to anyone and everyone. There is a version that can be used by anyone on any spiritual path, and one specifically for Christians. The content and principles are the same in both courses, but the wording and scripture quotes are slightly different. So let me know which one you’d like.

Please put “AONC Free Stuff” or something like it in the subject line of your email; I get a ton of marketing emails every day which I mostly ignore, and I don’t want to miss your request!

Just because I think Chris is so awesome…

I’ll help the first person who contacts me set up some facebook ads. I’ll walk you through targeting your best customer, and pushing the correct facebook ad buttons to set up a rockin’ campaign to sell your products/services.

    There are just 2 conditions:

    1. You need to already have a pretty good idea of who you want to target (who’s your best type of customer?), and
    2. You have to have at least a little bit of money to fund the ads on facebook. Depending on your niche, you may even be able to start with $5-10.

Please contact me through my website.

Great discussion – one of your best posts yet. And I especially liked getting little glimpses of your readers and some of their ventures (and their generous offerings are inspiring – I just offered to help a friend redesign her kitchen for free). Such variety! I’m interested in Amber’s offer of a free ticket for WDS. I didn’t sign up to go because my schedule and finances were a bit unpredictable at the time. In exchange for a free ticket I’ll donate the $50 exchange fee that I would have paid (and match it!) to a charitable organization of Amber’s choosing. Yay Amber – what a nice gesture.

  • Christian says:

I will share my nutrition-tracking spreadsheet to help people track their nutrition-intake. Use it to track how many calories, proteins, carbs and fat you consume. It will also try to estimate your daily energy-requirement (so you know how much you can eat to maintain your bodyweight, or loose/gain).

I am no nutritionist so I do not take any responsibilty in your use of it. I have learnt about nutrition through my participation in competitive sports, and this spreadsheet has helped me reach match-weight.

You can find the spreadsheet through the attached link, just make a copy of it and you are able to use it yourself.

  • Erik says:

    Hi Amber,

Sorry you won’t be able to attend this upcoming WDS, especially because you were looking forward to it so much.

That said, I am inspired by the generosity of your offer to give away your ticket. It is a great gift to your sister and her partner — both because of what you are sacrificing to be there for her and because you are sharing happiness with someone else on their special day.

Are you looking for a special wedding gift? What are they into? It seems that the best way to honor your gift would be to honor your sister’s marriage, and I’d be happy to help if I may.

    All the best,
    Erik

I’m a good writer and very intuitive. One of my strengths is in matching people up – in business and in their personal life. Something I did for myself and have done for friends is to write their personal ad. I would like to offer the first person who responds a phone session discussing what you are looking for in a personal relationship, and I will write some snappy copy for you.
I feel sorry for folks who are at a loss for words when trying to compose a unique ad for themselves and resort to cliches like “I’m looking for someone honest, sincere, and ready to be in a relationship; I like walks on the beach; equally comfortable in a tux or in jeans; blah blah blah” We are each unique individuals and deserve to attract someone who will appreciate our special-ness.
Let me help you do this! I have a track record. I met my husband this way many years ago and have helped friends do the same. This is not what I do for a living – it’s just something I’m good at and would like to offer someone.

This is brilliant. I have experience writing vision and mission statements for non-profits and small businesses as well as successful funding proposals. I’d be happy to help 5 people refine or write the vision and/or mission statements for their orgs or businesses. The former is usually between 5-10 words, but can be longer or shorter. The latter is usually from 20-50 words. It’s important to make every word count.

In addition, I’d love to send one basket produced by the wonderful weavers from my non-profit organisation to anyone anywhere. If you click the link you’ll see the work and the lovely baskets and products. Email me and explain why you’d like a basket and I’ll ask our staff to choose the most compelling (or giggle-inducing) response.

I’ve been playing catch-up with this whole community since I learned of everything a few months ago while starting design of my website and starting pursuit of turning my part-time “side-hustle” into a full-time endeavor ( I’m a magician).

I’m digging this free, pay-it-forward challenge and love all the wonderful offers made by all the posters here.

In the spirit of this challenge I will offer my copy of Seth Godin’s latest book “The Icarus Deception” that I just finished reading, and will ship to the first person who responds at my email address. (sevenofhearts@live.ca).

To Amber, whose generous WDS offer is heartwarming, I make an offer in return for your ticket. I will travel at my expense to your hometown and perform a full-evening of magic for you, your family and friends, and whoever else you want to squeeze into your abode for a special evening.

In addition, I will wear some clothing depicting your generosity when I attend WDS so that any and all I come in contact with will also by proxy become familiar with you.(I’m thinking a kind of human advertisement of sorts for you).

    Sincerely,

As part of my day job, I mentor graduate students and postdocs on writing at a large research University. From this experience, I’ve gotten good at writing journal articles for science/education journals and even better at giving really good, in-depth feedback that makes journal articles better.

    So, if you are:
    – struggling to write a manuscript for a journal
    – you’re not getting good feedback from your co-authors, and
    – your manuscript is *less than 30 pages long* (sorry, I can’t take on thesis)
I can provide one-time feedback for one person.

My feedback will be conceptual where possible, but at the very least I’ll be able to provide structural/organizational/grammar feedback, words of encouragement, and some tips on how to more efficiently approach the writing process.

Send me an email to this silly address emilybgood@hotmail.com if you this sounds useful to you.

I am an Interior Design professional with @ 12 years of education and experience in the field. I specialize in Green / Sustainable Design. I also suffer from chemical sensitivity, severe allergies and as teenager I was diagnosed with acute, chronic asthma. Today I am virtually symptom free. Through my extensive research, I have learned what contaminates to look for and eliminate from my lifestyle and home environment to relieve my symptoms. There are people out there who may not even know that they are being exposed to pollutants in their own home that might be causing them discomfort and/or making them sick. I gladly offer a free consultation at least one individual, (more if there is genuine interest), to help them assess the toxic load of their home environment so that they can start to eliminate elements that might be causing them illness or discomfort. Please be advised that I am not a doctor, and cannot diagnose any medical conditions, I can only offer solutions to creating a safer environment that is more conducive to healing. I will do offer this through April 15 as my schedule allows. (So if 2500 people hop on this with a bunch of questions, I won’t be able to get to everybody – but I do want to help as many as possible! 😀 )

I’d love the free ticket to World Domination that Amber so generously offered. I’m a freelance event planner and every time the World Domination tickets go on sale I always seem to be hitting a slow cash flow point. It just never works out.

I’d LOVE the opportunity to go and would be happy to somehow “pay it forward” before or after I’ve attended.

I have beaded jewelry I made early on when I first started out that never sold.

I also have some other accessories (purses, etc.) and some clothes (business wear) that are brand new or worn once or twice.

I have lost a considerable amount of weight due to a diagnosis last May of stage IV carcinoid cancer, so it’s time to minimize, and get these things to people who can use them.

I would like to donate to an organization(s) which specifically helps women who have changed/are changing their lives and are reentering the workforce.

Please call with your contact information. Message phone (424) 243-6810

    Thanks!

Helping People For Free as the latest subject line pulled me right in.

After scanning through the hundreds of comments from generous people offering their services, I spotted Rodney Washington.

Our company has a great culture and a really good business model (or so I thought), but there was something missing. We needed help from somebody who knew what they were doing.

Rodney offered a regularly paid 30-min strategy call (which ended up being an hour) for free, and he did just that. He helped me to realize the strengths of our company and to forget the weaknesses. Pursue the heart and the story behind our company and everything else will fall into place.

Not only is it obvious that Rodney knows his stuff and was kind enough to offer his services for free, he truly cared. When you are good at what you do on top of having a genuine interest for your customer’s success people reciprocate by spreading the love.

Go to Rodney’s site here and take him up on his incredible offer.

    You’re a good sister,

I am a fine artist inspired by travel and world architecture. I paint watercolors based on travel photos, and my specialty is in painting historic sites/architecture. Have a look at my website to get a feel for my work, and if you have a travel photo that you would like made into a watercolor, contact me using the form on my website and we’ll get started. The size of the watercolor will be 8×10 and there is one commission being offered to a participant based in the US (due to shipping logistics). I do this to celebrate the joy in travel and for sharing my passion!

I help young potentials gain clarity on what they want to do with their lives through coaching. I do this because I believe that living a life we love is a rebellious act that allows us to finally create a world that makes sense and benefits everyone.

If you’re a passionate twenty-something who knows that living a life you love must be possible, but need some further help making that a reality, shoot me an email to iris[at]brightlittlesocks[dot]com and tell me why you wanna work together.

If we’re a good fit I’ll happily do a free 45min coaching session with you.
