Update from Manila about Everything

Picture 10

Greetings, friends and readers. A few days ago I went to SFO, then I went to HKG, and then at 11pm local time (after 20 hours of travel), I made it in to MNL — also known as Manila, the Philippines.

From here I’m jumping off to Papua New Guinea, but hold on a minute. The last time I was in the Philippines, I was about eight years old. I lived here from 1984-1986 as part of my first big jump in cross-cultural life. I have vague memories of riding jeepneys, eating chicken and rice every night, and occasionally starting small fires in small trees.

Twenty-something years later, and here I am again. I don’t eat chicken or light trees on fire these days, but I’m still happy to ride around in jeepneys. Fun times! Even when I’m jet-lagged.

New readers, this is the Sunday Store Update. I use this time most weekends to write about the business side of AONC. The shop is a no-pressure environment. Browsing without buying is fine.

This week, there are so many things going on that I decided to combine many of them into one update. Here goes:

  • AONC Charity – thanks to everyone who has already pitched in to help out, even without a big push or matching gift. I’m working with my Charity: Water friends to get a tracking system going. I’ll write more about it when it’s ready, but we’re actively raising money in the meantime.
  • ‘$100 Biz Forum’ Waiting List – We’re in the middle of the inaugural group. It’s so much fun. Every day I log-in and look at dozens of comments from the participants helping each other with small business ideas.

Long story short, so many people have asked me about it that I decided to set up a waiting list. If you were disappointed about missing out on the first two groups a while back, you can sign up here to be notified about a future group.

Request: please only join the waiting list if you’re really serious about joining a future group. I’m not sure when the next group will be, but it won’t be for a while.

  • ‘Empire Building Kit’ Case Studies – I wrote about this last week and have since received hundreds of stories. Thanks to those who write in! I now have many more than I need. I’ll be looking at all of them more closely as I outline the project over the next few weeks.
  • Postcards – thanks for sending them. I’m in Asia for two weeks, but I’ll look forward to reading them as soon as I get back.
  • Bangkok Meetup – if you’re in the area, a small group of us will be meeting somewhere in town this Friday night, the 19th. RSVP here for details as soon as I know them.

There’s more, but I need to head out to Papua New Guinea. I hope all is well with you wherever you are.
