Weekend Update: Writing Contest, Social Web, + Portland Meetup

There’s a heat wave in Portland! It’s 93° today, but I managed to survive my weekly long run this morning. I love running in my home city, especially when I don’t get lost.

A few announcements for this weekend update:

Our Unconventional Writing Contest has now ended. A trusted adviser from Australia is going through the initial pack of entries, and we’ll get some more feedback from other members of the Supreme Court before narrowing down the finalists over the next couple of weeks.

It looks like we received more than 150 complete entries. There were also a few oddities, like the guy who wrote an essay about why I should promote his psychic workshops – but among the 150, it looks like there are some entries with real promise.

Anyway, I’m excited. Thanks so much to everyone who participated. We’ll announce the winners and award the prizes before my next trip (about three weeks away) if not sooner.

The Unconventional Guide to the Social Web

My next business project is in the middle of development, and I can now tell you what it is. It’s all about helping individuals and small organizations use social media for good. I’m producing the guide together with a new friend, Gwen Bell.

Gwen is a fellow vagabond and entrepreneur, having started a yoga studio while living in Japan (among other things). She’s now based in Boulder, Colorado, when not flying around the planet to consult or speak. Gwen helps businesses understand “the internet thing” so they can add value and interact better with their customers.

On my side of the fence, I don’t do any consulting, but I’ve learned a few things about using social media to generate interest in my work and create a new career over the past year. I wrote about part of the process in the 279 Days to Overnight Success manifesto, and this project will go into the technical side of things in much more detail.

We expect to launch the project on August 18th, less than one month from now. Stay tuned for much more info in weeks to come!

Portland, Oregon Meet-Up (August 6th)

Since I’m in town for a while, I’ve decided to host a local meetup to get to know more of my fellow Portlanders. If you’ll be around, come and hang out on August 6th, 7-9pm in the Southeast. RSVP over here for the location.

(If you read my posts on Twitter, this was originally scheduled for this Thursday – it’s now moved to next Thursday due to a scheduling conflict.)

See you tomorrow, when we’ll look at What They Say About Winners. I hope you’re well, wherever you are.
