Motivation and Product Launches

why-do-this

For a few months I used this image as my laptop background. Why do you do the things you do? is always a good question to ask yourself, whether in business or in life.

This is the Sunday Store Update, where I write about the business side of AONC. Earlier this week I had the quietest product launch in world AONC history. A few weeks beforehand, we took over the internet with a barrage of announcements and reviews for the Empire Building Kit. That was fun, but you can’t take over the internet every month, at least not for the same project.

Wednesday morning I got up before 5am like I do for every launch, but my promo efforts were extremely limited. I sent a note to the self-selected waiting list, posted a single mention on Twitter, and made sure my affiliate partners had whatever they needed.

But that was it. I didn’t even send an email to our main list—so if you read AONC through the mailings, you didn’t even hear about it.)

Why hold back so much? Because I love business development, but I also love doing new things.

Important lesson: It’s very difficult to motivate yourself to do something. It’s much easier to leverage what you are already motivated to do.

So in terms of Empire Building, it’s been a great deal of fun working on this project over the past four months. I have no doubt I could make much more money by continuing the once-in-a-while launching strategy… but I’m ready to work on new things. The publication of the AONC print book. My trips, including two final overseas adventures in July and August before touring the United States this fall. The blog. The other fun stuff I do.

So with that in mind, the Empire Building Kit is now available on a long-term basis. No 24-hour launch period, no hurry-up-and-decide-now, no big push. Check it out here:

I do reserve the right to take it off the market without notice. And yes, I’ll probably do a price increase at some point—but in keeping with the principle of “do what you’re motivated to do,” it won’t be for a while. You can also buy from an affiliate and support their work.

But that’s it. The softest product launch ever, because the EBK speaks for itself and those who are interested can learn more on the site.

Thanks for all your support. I’ll see you next Sunday with news about the Unconventional Guide to Freelancing, also known as “the final business project of the year.” After that, I’ll be changing gears and moving on to new things. Because it’s always better to do what you’re motivated to do instead of trying to manufacture motivation.

Speaking of… What are you motivated to do? Why not find a way to do more of that?

Have a great week, wherever you are.
