Excellent Article. Has anyone had any experience with traveling to Baikanur, the Russian Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan? We'll be heading there in the summer to study the community there.

We'll also be traveling to Iran as Americans which requires a good amount of coordination unless you can afford to be overseen by a tour guide at all times.

For traveling into Turkmenistan, we plan to get the five day transit visa since we've heard Turkmenistan doesn't warrant too much time for exploration, but is worth seeing.

I must say getting a visa for Burma/Myanmar was very straightforward: shipped my passport alongside two photos and a €35 check to the embassy, waited for 10 days and then told DHL to pick up my passport+visa at the embassy. It might be a whole different story in the US, though... :)

I have Iran on my list in 2010. If you still plan to go, let me know and maybe we can meet there. Besides US, I have an European citizenship, so I may make use of that dusty passport ... if I can manage to renew it this year.

Yes, definately a place! I went through north korea travel, check the link under my signature, as they had the lowest rates I saw. Like a trip to an asian soviet union or that book 1984

Going to North Korea properly should be on your list. I have travelled to a lot of interesting countries, and North Korea is by far and away the most 'out of this world'. I did it through Koryo Tours. Dead simple, and not that expensive. Recommend you add it to the list. As a US passport holder, you can go during Mass Games.

Great, informative post! A couple of surprises for me though:

1) I was a little surprised to see Syria on this list. I thought it was a fairly mainstream Middle Eastern tourism destination? I see stories on Damascus in travel mags/papers all the time.

2) Also surprised to see no discussion of the implications of travel to some of these countries. Zimbabwe's an easy example -- you mentioned you'd like to see a freer Zimbabwe someday, but didn't acknowledge the frequently-made argument that traveling there now could be helping to prevent that Zimbabwe from coming into being.

I love how accessible you made all these "no-go" places feel, though! It's nice to know I have options, although for many of these governments, I would probably exercise my choice not to go.

Ever been to the West Bank? I've always been curious about the ease/difficulty of crossing.

For anyone wanting to go to Afghanistan...

Visas can be had quite easily (in about 30 minutes) at the Afghan consulate in the Pakistani city of Peshawar...costs $30 USD.

They are generally valid for one month, although you can also pay off the Afghan immigration at the Khyber Pass border to extend your visa to however long you wish to stay...
