This is great. I have a huge desire to visit St. Petersburg, both because it looks beautiful in pictures and because I've read so many great Russian books. Apparently you can enter via cruise into Petersburg's port without a visa if you're accompanied throughout the extent of your short visit, but really, there may be so many restrictions that it may be worth it to just get the visa.

My wife and I just got back from a fantastic trip to Iceland and western Norway... IcelandAir was great; I have the feeling we'll be flying with them again.

Chris,

I now read 2 posts in which you mentioned Romania and I have the feeling that your experiences there haven't been the greatest, or better said the fullest. Next time you go or transit through that country, do let me know. I can put you in touch with some people who can show you around. It is indeed a beautiful country, with awesome scenery (oustide Bucharest) and the most welcoming people in Eastern Europe (don't forget they are Latin, unlike the rest of the Eastern block). You will never run to catch an earlier flight anymore.

And by the way, thanks for this website and your blog entries. I stumbled upon it last night and I cannot stop reading ...

Happy travels,
Alex

@Frog and @Ariel,

Thanks!!

@Moldova in the World,

Wow, I didn't realize you were reading. I wish I had known about you before I went to Chisinau so I could ask a couple of questions. The time there was short but good-- I had some good conversations with people.

@C.J.,

Thanks! Well, using only one carry-on bag is half the battle. Once you eliminate the big suitcases, it tends to go quicker since there's not as much room. I am not as efficient with it as I would like to be... but I have a lot more countries to go, so maybe I'll improve.

I am throughly awed by your 20 minute minimalist packing. It has inspired me to at least consider that I might forego having to pack matching shoes with every outfit.

Seriously i love that you travel as a person and not a tourist. i know you are leaving people in each country that can say "I met an american once and they aren't all that bad,in fact they were rather a decent sort"
it helps us too, as we travel vicariously with you ,as your , to realize that the rest of the world consists of mostly decent folks as well.
So thanks Chris,wherever you go..there we are.

Great trip report, Chris! As much as I love and have been inspired by your World Domination Manifesto and essays on leading an unconventional life, the trip reports are still my favorite part of the site. It's always interesting learning about other cultures and getting useful travel tips I'd rather not learn the hard way (like not using taxis you find inside the airport). You've also inspired me to actually start making plans to do the traveling I've always wanted to do but had always put off until some indefinite time in the future, as so many of us tend to do with so many of our goals.

Hi Chris,

Just wanted to leave a quick note to say that your essay is fabulous and has me thinking about how I will accomplish travelling the world myself. I would not say that I am currently a traveller but I definitely have a huge desire to get out there and see the world. As always, I googled Round the World Ticket, since I had not heard about it before (I am fairly new to reading your blog) and that just increase my desire to travel. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Your essays are always inspiring and encouraging. Thank you.
